This invention relates to improvements in a center filling stop motion by which absence of filling is detected and indicated in a loom.
When starting up a loom, the lay frequently moves forward without any filling in such position in the shed to engage and hold the filling fork above the shuttle race. The earlier types of center stop motion would stop the loom under such conditions, before the first filling shot. could be inserted.
Devices have been developed for preventing the stopping of the loom upon this first forward movement thereof after the loom is started but permitting the stopping of the loom upon the second or any subsequent forward movement.
It is the'ob-ject of my invention to improve the construction of such deferring de vices by providing means for positively locking the mechanism out of operation during the first forward movement, but causing the mechanism to be unlocked during the completion of such movement, so that it may be operated upon the next or any succeeding pick. For this purpose I preferably provide a shield for preventing operation of the stop motion and a positive latch for the shield, which latch is moved out of locking position upon the first forward movement of the lay.
My invention further relates to arrangements and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter described and more. particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
A preferred form of the invention is shown in the drawings in which Fig. 1 is a left hand side elevation of my improved stop motion;
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 but showing the parts in different position;

Referring to the drawings, 1 have shown a portion of a breast beam 9 and a lay 10 of the usual type and I have shown a bracket or stand 11 bolted to the rear face of the breast beam. A shipper rod 12 is mounted in the loom frame below the breast b 9 and provided with an arm 13 adapted. ta be Serial No. 40,058.
engaged by a stud 14 projecting from the side of an actuating member or lever 15. The lever 15 is pivoted at 16 to a depending portion of the bracket or stand 11. Said lever is substantially U-shaped in outline and is provided at its upper rear end with a recessed contact face 17.
A latch or dagger 20 having an offset end is mounted in an arm 21 pivoted at 22 below the lay 10. The arm is connected by a link 23 to any arm 24: secured to a rod 25 upon which the center filling fork 26 is mounted.
A cam plate 27 is clamped to the rear end of the stand 12 and raises the dagger 20 and the filling fork connected therewith as the lay moves rearward. If no filling is mserted in the shed before the lay thereafter moves forward, the filling. fork moves downward and the dagger 20 engages. the end 17 of the member 15, rocking the member and acting through the stud 14 and arm 13 to move the shipper rod 12 and stop the loom.
All of the parts thus far described are of ment of the lay, I provide a shield 30 and a latch 81. The shield 30 is pivoted at 32 on the stand 11 and the latch 31 is pivoted at 33 thereon. The lower end of the shield 30 is provided with a slot 34, a lug 35 and ashoulder 36.
A stud 37 in the stand 11 extends through the slot 34.- and limits movement of the shield in both directions. A flat spring 38 is secured to the shipper rod 12 and engages the lug 35 as the shipper rod is moved in the direction of the arrow at to stop the loom, thus depressing the forward end of the shield 30 and moving the shield to operative position.
The latch 51 has an upwardly projecting operative position and the latch to operative position.
Having described the construction of my improved stop motion, the operation thereof is as follows: hen the loom is stopped and the shipper rod moves in the direction of the arrow at in F 1, the front end of the shield 30 is depressed and the latch 31 is snapped into position to hold the shield in operative position. When the loom is start ed and the dagger 20 thereafter moves forward, the shield prevents engagement of the dagger with the end- 17 of the member 15 on its first forward movement. Act the end of its forward movement, however, the dagger engages the projection l0 of the latch 31, swinging the hi 41 out of the recess 42 and permitting the shield to move toithe inoperative position shown in Fig, 2, under the influence of the spring 4 11..
On the second or any subsequent forward movement of the dagger, ifnot held out of operation by a filling thread, the dagger will engage the end 17 of the member 15, rocking said member upon its pivot: and acting through the shipper rod i). to stop thc loom. As the loom comes to rest, the shipper rod depresses the spring 88. which returns the shield to operative position, where it is retained by the latch 31.
I have thus provided an exceedingly simple mechanism for deferring the action of the stop motion and I have so-constructed the same that the stop motion is positively locked out of operation during the first for ward movement of the lay but is released for action upon the next forward movement or upon any succeeding forward movement of the lay.
Having thus described my invention and the advantages thereof, I do not wish to be limited to the details herein disclosed other wise than as set forth in the claims, but what I claim is 1. A center filling stop motion for looms comprising a shipper rod, an arm on said rod, a fixed stand, an actuating member mounted on said stand and engaging said arm to actuate the shipper, a filling fork and dagger mounted on the lay, said dagger bcing connected to said filling fork and being adapted to engage and move said actuating member, a shield movable into position to cover the end of said actuating member and prevent operation thereof, and a latch for said shield, said latch being rendered inoperative by said dagger on the first forward movement of the lay after the loom is started in motion.

A center filling stop motion for looms comprising a shipper rod, an arm on said rod, a fixed stand, an actuating member mounted on sa d stand and engaging said arm to actuate the shipper, a filling fork and dagger mounted 011 the lay, said dagger being connected to said filling fork and being adapted to engage and move said actuating member, a shield movable into position to cover the end of said actuating member and prevent operation thereof, a latch for said shield, said latch being rendered inoperative by said dagger on its first forward movement with the lay. and a spring to withdraw said shield to inoperative position, when unlatched.

A center filling stop motion for looms comprising a shipper rod, an arm on said rod, a fixed stand, an actuating member mounted on said stand and engaging said arm toactuate the shipper, a filling fork and dagger mounted on the lay, said dagger being connected to said filling fork and being adapted to engage and move said actuating member, a shield movable into position to cover the end of said, actuating member and prevent operation thereof, a latch for said shield, said latch being rendered inoperative by said (hi or on its firstforward. movement with the lay. and a single spring connecting said shield and latch and effeetiige. to more said latch yieldingly to locking position and to move said shield yieldingly to inoperative position. 7 v

5. A center filling stop motion for looms comprising a shipper rod, an arm on said rod, a fixed stand, an actuating member mounted on said stand'and engaging said arm to actuate the shipper, a filling fork and dagger mounted on the lay, said dagger being connected to said filling fork and being adapted to engage and move said actuat member, a shield movable into pos ti to cover the end of said-actuating member flltl prevent operation thereof, a latch for said shield, said latch being rendered inopei'ative by said dagger on its first forward movement with the lay after loom stoppage and said latch being automatically reset whenever said shield is raised to inoperative pos tion.
