G. W. HYDORN COMB Filed June 23. 1926 INVENTOR Georg e 94? J/ydorn.
MATTORNEY Patented Mar. 27, 1928.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE;
enoaenw. HYDORN, or Los anentns, CALIFORNIA.
Application filed J'une23, 1926. Serial No. 1 17,8 94,
This invention relates to combs particularly its object the provision of a comb which will afford a maximum of efficiency when used by a barber in cutting hair. i
An object is to provide a comb with a finger rest which will eliminate the heretofore objectionable features ofthe comb teeth irritating the forefinger of the barber when the comb is in use.
Another object is to so construct a comb for barbers use that the shears will not be likely to engage and cut the hair below the comb when used in connection with the comb for cutting hair and still provide a comb that will not be cumbersome or hinder the barber in his work.
Another object is to provide a comb for barber's use whereby the barber will be enabled to easily roll the comb in tapering the hair without hindrance or interference from the back of the comb during this operation; and to also provide a comb with a cutting surface which will not interfere with the shears when used in conjunction with the comb.
Another object is to provide sufficient strength for a comb by adding thickness thereto and which when incorporated in the comb will not be bulky or in the way when using the comb in cutting hair.
Other objects, advantages and features of invention may appear from the accompanying drawing, the subjoined detail description, and the appended claims.
The accompanying drawing illustrates the invention in one style and form I at present deem preferable.
Figure 1 is a side view of a comb con structed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a top edge view of thecomb shown in Fig. 1, and as viewed from the left hand side of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a bottom edge view of the comb as viewed from the right hand side of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a comb constructed in accordance with my invention. Parts are broken away to more clearly illustrate the construction.
Fig. 5 is an end view of mynovel comb looking from the lower end of Fig. 4.
My invention comprises constructing a comb having a body 1 with a plurality of teeth 2 which extend from said body and are arranged, on opposite sides of the transverse center of the comb, in longitudinal rows or adapted for. use by barber's and has for planes that are offset relative to one another. In other words the teeth on one half of the comb are in a longitudinal plane that is offset from the longitudinal plane in which the teeth on the other half of the comb are arranged.
'As shown in Figs. 4 and 5 I provide the comb on each longitudinal side with a straight smooth cutting surface 3 and with a rounded or convex surface 4, and each of said surfaces extend from the end of the comb to a central thickened portion 5 the top of-which is of approximately the same thickness as the bottom for the forefinger of the user and also adds to the'strength or rigidity of the comb.
The teeth 2 extend from the comb body approximately one-half the width of the comb or a distance equal to the width of the body and the solid portion 6 which extends below the teeth 2 for a. distance about equal to thelength of the teeth provides a guard to prevent the shears from cutting the hair below the comb when used in connection with the comb for cutting the hair.
The convex surfaces 4 taper from the transverse central portion of the comb toward the ends thereof so as to provide a comb of graduated thickness to facilitate and aid the barber in cutting hair; and the longitudinal sides may be tapered as shown or in any suitable manner.
In Figs. 4 and 5 it will be noted that the ends'of the comb in cross section are in the form of a segment and the greatest thicknessof the comb is approximately at the middle of the width. of or the longitudinal center of, the comb and the roots of the teeth terminate at such thickest portion, thus giving strength. to the comb at the point needed without making the comb cumbersome. The convex surface 4 curves toward the top and bottom or back of the comb from the central thickened portion where the teeth terminate in approximately the same curvature. 1
In practice the convex surface 4. is used next to the head and the shears are used in connection with the surface 3.
By curving the surface 4 from the longitudinal center of the comb to the heel or back thereof I providea novel comb which may be rolled without interference in tapering the hair.
Iclaim:
1. A comb of the character set forth havand provides a finger rest ing a central thickened portion the top of which is of approximately the same Width as the bottom and said central portion being of sufficient length to provide a finger rest for the forefinger of the user; and rows of teeth adjacent said central portion.
'2. A comb of the character set forth comprising a body; teeth extending from said body approximately a distance equal to the Width of said body: and said teeth having a 3. A comb of the character set forth comprising teeth; and a solid portion extending below said teeth a distance approximately equal to the length of said teeth; one side of said teeth and solid portion being provided with a straight and smooth surface and the other side of said teeth and solid portion being provided with a convex surface; said convex surface tapering from the center of the comb toward the end thereof.
In testimony Whereof,'I have hereunto set my hand at Los Angeles, California; this 17th day of June, 1926.
