rniiss BOARD.
Application filed November 22, 1926. Serial No. 149,928.
My invention relates to devices for the carrying of fabricarticl'es during the press'- -ing of `the same, and .more -paiticularly to pressing boards used in laundries and drycleaning establishments. :It is kmy :purpose to provide a pressing board unit having a plurality Aof 'board members and-so being adapted for the efficient handling of a variety of articles to be pressed, especially for the finishing of sleeves of diiferent apparel items. y
In accomplishing this purpose Iprovide a bracket which is preferably supported on a goosene'ck vertical `pedestal and is provided with alaterally extended sole; and a plurality of pressing boards representing the several shapes and sizes which the industry and the particular dry cleaner may desire for the efficient and Aexpeditious pressing of articles of various sizes and shapes. I particularly offer novel means of attaching Ya pressing board to the bracket so that a board may be removed vquickly and easily, and a different board may be attached, by a miniinuinof movements; the board fittingsnugly on the sole ofthe bracket and vbeing firmly secured thereto, whereby the operation of pressing upon it may be carried on most successfully. i
rThe provision of a plurality `of `boards makes it possible for the owner yof an establishment to install a substantial pedestal and bracket, and providea desired number of diilerent shapes'of pressing boards, at a minimum of expense and storage room; as contrasted with the present situation in which the more satisfactory available boards or devices mustbe separately set up'and so occupy a lcomparatively large amount of work-r`oom space, or must be moved into position from storage when required; or a single board illadapted to the many sorts of articles pressed upon it must be installed.
f AThe several features of my `invention and their functions will be more particularly `described with references to the drawings, in which: y i f Fig. l is a perspective view of my pressing board device.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view, the
base and pressing board members being vshown in part.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the supporting member of the pressing board and of the bracket, disconnected. y
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the pressing board and its supporting member. i
Fig. 5 is a sectional view of a part of fthe bracket containing the means of latching the pressing board to the bracket. 4
VFig. 6 isa vertical transverse section vof the pressing board and its supporting member.
Referring more in detail to the drawings:
- l ydesignates a bracket comprising a Ebase plate 2, a. pedestal or support 3 anda sole or plate il, the bracket'being preferably a casting. the base plate, pedestal and sole being integral. The sole is preferably of atiron shape and the broader portion thereof Vis fixed tothe pedestal, the'narrower endy thereof being extended laterally and relatively parallel withwthe base plate.V The pedestal is preferably curved over the base plate and gooseneck shaped and has a rearwardly extendingrib 3f provided with 'a boss 3'. the combination of the gooseneck-shaped pedestal and theextended sole providing the usual form of a kpressing device yfor convenient manipulation thereon of garments. The sole is provided with a ceiitrallongitudiiial surface rib 5 (Fig. 3) whichdeclines towards the edges. The sole is provided, on a position preferably adjacent the juncture of sole with pedestal, with-a tapering opening constituting 3. socket 6; and has aflongitudinal bore 7 extending from the fixed end ofthe sole, and yparallel withits axis, to said socket. i l
The outline of the bore 7 in the sole is disclosed in Fig. 5 wherein shoulders 8 are .shown constituting' a restricted opening for said *.boreinto the tapering socket 6. A
.locking element is provided preferably a ball '19 movable in `the bore 7 and projectible into the socket (Stand restrained from egress into the socket by the shoulders 8. A Yspring l0 is positioned in the bore bearing against the ball andagainst a doivel 11 mounted in said. bore and fixed therein by a pin or screw indicated by 12 projected through thesole adjacent the iixedendl thereof and into an aper i ture 13 of the dowel. The spring `serves to hold the bally partly projected intok socket 6 and in Contact with the shoulder 8; and to return the ball to such engagement upon the release of any influence that may have displaced it therefrom.
The dowel projects from the fixed end of the sole to an extent measured by adaptation of the dowels end curves for engagement of the dowel with a. pressing board supporting member' 14, and detachment therefrom of the supporting member by a tilting motion, as will now be described.
The supporting or attaching member let comprises a plate 15, the under surface of which is transversely angularly arched to provide a recessed contour indicated by the numeral 16 which makes it substantially complementary to the upper surface ofthe ribbed sole 4; the concavity of said plate, however, having a less obtuse angle than'the convexity of said sole; and the plate having preferably the same horizontal outline as the sole.` A flange 17 depends from the wider end of the plate and is provided with a horizontal opening 18 adapted for the reception of the dowel 11 that projects from the fixed end of the bracket sole. A tapered lug 19 is provided depending from the plate 15 and adapted to seat in the socket of the sole, the lug having a truncate semi-globular concavity 20 positioned facing thel flange 17 and with its axis in the inwardly extended axis of the opening 18.
Guide projections 21 comprising fingers are provided depending from, the flange- 17 and adapted for engagement with the pedes tal, as a means of guiding the supporting member into position for reception of the ydowel in the opening in the flange 17.
The supporting member 11i is preferably a permanent part of a pressing board unit; the shaped pressing board member designed to carry a garment, or a part of a garment, to be pressed being designated as 22; and a plurality of such pressing board units comprising the garment carrying member and the supporting member, may bevprovided as my device contemplates. The plate 15 of the supporting member `is provided with screw threaded openings 23 disposed to coincide with openings 24 in the garment carrying member for the projection of screws 25, the` heads and points of which are sunk, whereby a smooth under surface for the plate and a smooth upper surface for the garment carrying member are preserved. The supporting member 14s is provided with a boss 26 laterally extending fromthe wider end thereof and having an opening 27 for the accommodation of a loop 28 adapted to engage and secure an end of a cover 29 with which the garment carrying member of the pressing board may be provided.
The parts sofar described having been provided, the. pressing board unit, which, as stated, is one of a plurality of units having different shaped garment carrying members, is attached to the bracket in the following manner:
The board is tilted, the flanged end of the supporting member depressed and guided into position by the projections 21 engaged over therib, and the dowel is engaged in the opening of the flange. The remote end of the pressing board is then depressed, the lug depending from the plate entering the Y socket of the sole and, by reason of the said lugs tapered shape, displacing the ball into the channel against the` spring 10. The tapered lug, entering-and proceeding through the tapered socket, bears against the walls Y of the socket in opposition to the flanged end of the supporting memberY that is retained by theV dowel and that bears against the end of the sole; the lug therefore acting as a lever to draw the supporting member longitudinally and into close Contact with the sole. r:Ehe ball rolling away from the socket under the influence of the ing, is returned under the influence of the spring into normal position by its admission into the concavity 2O of the lug; the ball there serving to latch the lug and the plate in engagement with the sole. The substantially complement-ary contour of sole uppersurface and plate lower surface as mentioned enable the two to engage veach other snugly; attention being called to the structure by which the outer edges of the two members are engaged, due to the greater concavity of the plate compared with the convexity of the sole. The pressing board therefore is held in close contact to, and so is secure and stable in its connection with, the sole and the bracket.
`When it is desired to remove the pressing board, for example, for substituting of a board of a. dierent shape, the remote. end of the pressing board is lifted, the influence being smiicient through the exercise of a slight force to extricate the lug from its engagement with the ball by displacing the ball into the channel; and as the pressing board is tilted, the flange is released from its engagement with the dowel. The provision of a ball as a latching element reduces the frictional wear connected with dispacement of the latch; and also reduces the burden involved, since the rolling of the ball facilitates the positioning of thelug which at such moment supports the board, in the socket.
The bracket is, in the construction illustrated, fixed on a base 30 which may be` of wood or iron. Internally screw threaded openings are provided indicated by 31 in the base plate of the bracket, and openings 32 in the base, screws 33 joining the two elements and being countersunk in the base enabling the base to present a smooth lower surface; and as shown, the screws projecting into the base plate of the bracket approximately to llU the thickness thereof so that a smooth surface is presented, whereby. possible accidental damage to the garments being pressed is avoided.
