IMPROVEMENT IN BOTTLE-STOPPERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 166,298, dated August 3, 1875; application iilcd J uly 17, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE E. REED, of Brooklyn, Kings county, New York, have invented a new and Improved Bottle-Stopper, of which the following is a specification:

The object of this invention is to furnish an improved bottle stopper, which shall be so constructed that it can be readily fastened in place and unfastened, and which, when unfastcned, cannot become lost from the bottle.

The invention consists in an improved bot tle-stopper formed of the body provided with ring-grooves upon its upper and lower parts, and the slot in its upper part, the rubber band and the metal band provided with the inclines, the handles, and the notches, in combination with the wire loop and the wire band, as hereinat'ter fully described.

A is the body of the stopper, which may be made of wood, metal, or other suitable material. The lower part of the stopper A, that enters the lnouth ofthe bottle, is provided with a shallow rin g-groove to receive a rubber band, B, which is made thicker than the depth of the said groove, so that nothing but the rubber band can come in contact with the mouth of the bottle. Around the upper part of the stopper A, that projects above the mouth of the bottle, is formed a wide and shallow ringgroove to receive a metal band, G. In the upper edge of the opposite parts of band O are formed inclines c1, the shoulders at the lower' ends of which are bent outward to serve as handles c2, for turning' the said band. In the band C, at the lower ends of the inclines c1, are formed notches or slots c3, to receive the loop D, to allow the stopper to be removed from the mouth of the bottle. The wire loop D is passed through a slot, a1, iuthe upper part ofthe stopper' A, and its ends are secured to the opposite sides of the bottles neck by a wire band, E, passed around the said neck. The stopper is fastened, when pressed into the mouth of the bottle, by turning the band O, so that the inclines c1 may press against the bend of the loop D, and thus secure the stopper in place.. By turning the band O back the stopper is untastened, when the slot as and the notches c3 allow it to .be removed from the mouth of the bottle and turned to one side out of the way, while at the same time the said stopper cannot become detached from the bottle and lost.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl An improved bottle-stopper formed of the body A, provided with ring-grooves upon its lower and upper parts, and the slot az', the rubber band B, and the metal band O, provided with the inclines c1, the handles c2, and the notches c3, in combination with the wire loop D and wire band E. substantially as herein shown and described.
