No.166,297. PatentedAug.3,1875.
UNITED STATES- PATENT OFFICEc FANNIE L. PICKETT, OF FLORENCE, ALABAMA.
IMPRovEMENT IN SHIRT-Borsolvls.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 166,297, dated August 3, 1875; application filed May 17, 1875.
To all whom itmay concern:
Beit known that I, FANNIE L. PICKETT, of Florence, in the county of Lauderdale and State of Alabama, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shirt B'osoms, of which the follow ng is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and the letters of reference marked thereon, making part of this specification This invention is an improvement in the meansof securing the opening or front edges of a shirt-bosom; and the inventionconsists in the combination, with the middle or front plaits of a shirt-bosom, of an auxiliary plait or band of material, constructed and arranged in the manner hereinafter more particularly described.
In the accompanying sheet of drawings, Figure l represents a shirt-bosom with its front edges disconnected; Fig. 2, the auxiliary plait or connecting-band, and Fig. 3 the shirt-front as closed'and secured in place by the connecting-band.
The shirt-bosom is made in the usual manner, except as to the middle overlapping plai ts. 0f these, one is slightly narrower than the other, and both are provided with transverse slots or openings at intervals along their length, and which are so arranged that when one plait is lapped or folded upon the other these slots or openings will coincide, so as to allow the connecting-band to be drawn in and out through them, to interlock the two plaits, and thereby fasten the shirtfront. The band may be secured at its ends by buttons-one upon the neck-band, and one at the lower end of the bosom-or by other suitable means.
In the drawing, A represents the shirt-bosom, of which a and b are themiddleplaits. c,
Fig. 2, is the auxiliary plait or connectingband, and d d the-slots or openings in the plaits.
To close the shirtfront the plaits are placed one upon the other, so that the slots will coincide. The connecting-piece is then drawn in and out through them, and fastened at the ends by the buttons, or otherwise. The band c may, if desired, be sewed to the shirt, either at the upper or the lower end. By this means a very neat and convenient shirt-front is provided at little expense, and by which I am enabled to dispense with the usual fastening devices-11amely, buttons or studs and button-holes, or screw-studs and eyelets, all of which modes of fastening involve more expensive labor, and especially necessitate much tedious after-repairing in sewing on buttons, and mending button-holes and eyelet-holes, and which make the garment more difficult to be laundried. Any suitable stiffening may be applied to the end `of the band c, to enable it to be more readily passed through the slots. l Having now fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The detachable fastening-band c, in combination with a shirt-front, substantially as described.
2. The band c, in combination with the two sides of an open shirt-front, provided, respectively, with slots d d, as and for the purposes specified.
3. An open shirt-front provided with the slots d d, arranged as and for the purposes' specitied.
