Description
J. HARRIS ANTIFREEZING CONNECTION FOR TANKS AND REGULATORS March 13, 1928.
Filed Dec. 29. 1921 Patented Mar. 13, l 1928.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE;
JOHN HARRIS, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSI GNOR TO THE HARRIS CALORIIEIC COMPANY, F CLEVELAND, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO. f
ANTIFREEZING CONNEGTION FOR TANKS AND REGULATORS.
Application led December 29, -1921. Serial No. 525,618.
This invention relates to the tanks and lregulators employed with gases, and more particularly to tanks and regulators of the type used in connection with oxygen and the combustible gases employed for the cutting and Welding of metal. ,In the operation of regulators with such gases,- considerable annoyance and delay in operation have been caused by the freezing of the regulator con'- nections and the parts of the regulator, due to the sudden expansion of the gases when liberated from their tanks or cylinders.
It is the object of this invention to pre-- vent this freezing operation and to accomplish the same in a most efficient manner and in and throu h the use of a connection which is particular y "simple in construction and economical of production. In the drawings., I have shown my invention in connection with a tank and regulator of ordinary standard construction, l representing in elevation a portion o a supply tank and a regulator adapted to communicate with said tank through my connection; Fig. 2 an enlarged longitudinal sectional view through my connection therewith; and Fig. 3 a sectional view corresponding to the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
Describing by reference characters thev various/parts illustrated herein, 1 denotes a supply tank for the gas, the pressure whereof is to bel regulated. This tank is provided at its upper end with the usual valve 2 and valve casing 2a whereby the flow of gas from the tank to the outlet connection 3 through the said casing maybe controlled or cut oit, as desired. The outer end ofl the connection 3 is threaded for the rece tion of a gland nut 4 having a flange or shoulder la which is adapted to engage a flange or shoulder 5 upon a nipple 5 having ay rounded end 5 a apted to seat against the correspondingly shaped end (not shown) of the connection 3. The nipple 5 is provided with a bore 5 adapted to register with the bore of the nipple and to discharge at its outer end into my connection, the body of which vis indicated at 6, said connection being lthreaded upon the adjacent end of the nip le and being provided at such end with a t readed and the parts associated sorption of heat by the expanded gases from chamber 6a for the reception of the threaded end of the nipple, said chamber communii eating with the bore 5c and with a bore 6", 6c," extending through the said connection and communicating with the receiving chamber 7 of the regulator 7, which regulator may be of any standard construction.
The connection 6 is preferably somewhat longer than the connections usually employed between tanks and their regulators and is provided with temperature equalizing ribs 6d projecting therefrom, these ribs being preferably formed as integral rings or collars, projecting from the exterior surface of the connection and being spaced apart.
In operation, the valve 2 will be opened in the usual manner to permit gas from the cylinder or tank 1 to pass into the connection 3, nipple 5, connection 6, and regulator 7. It will be noted that the bore section 6b is of greater diameter than the bores 5c and borev section, 6c, whereby some expansion is permitted to the gases entering the first mentioned bore section. This preliminary expansion results in an absorption of heat by the expanded gas from the` connection 6, but freezing and solidiflcation is prevented by the ribs or flanges 6, which serve as telnperature equalizers to prevent too rapid absuch connection and the consequent detrimental lowering of the temperature of the body of the connection and of the gas therewithin. The gas, thus partly expanded, is conducted into the receiving chamber 7a of the regulator and, because of the action of the temperature-equalizing connection 6, will not cause freezing of the parts of the regulator by reason of the further expansion of the gas within such chamber.' v 90 Having thus described my invention, what I claim is: The combination with a gas tank having a valve controlled outlet, of a regulator, a relatively short rigid connection interposed between said outlet and regulator and hav'- ing sufficient rigidity to sustain the weight of the regulator and its associated parts, said connection comprising an annular member having an enlarged receiving portion and a restricted discharge portion, the perature equallzlng ribs projecting from thc receiving end of said connection being exterior surface thereof thereby to neutralthreaded for the reception of u gland nut ize the cooling effect due to the expansion of 10 for connecting the same with said gas tank, the gus flowing through said connection.
5 the opposite end of said connection being In testimony whereof, I hereunto nlix my adapted for connection with said regulator, signature. said connection having a plurality of tem- JOHN HARRIS.
