Description
X. LONGTIN.
AIR VALVE.
APPLICATION FILED JAN. 31, 1913.

Ijs:
t UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE@ XYSTE LONGTIN, OF ST. JOHNS, QUEBEC, CANADA, ASSIGNOR 0F ONE-HALF T0 LOUIS A. GOSSELIN, 0F MONTREAL, CANADA.
AIR-VALVE.
To @ZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, XYs'rn LoNGriN, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and residing at 54 Jacques Cartier street, St. Johns, Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Air-Valves; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention to be hereinafter described relates to compressed air valves.
In order to more clearly disclose the construction, operation, anduse ofthe invention, reference should be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of the present application.
Throughout the several figures of the drawings like reference characters designate the same parts.
In the drawings: Figure l is a side elevation of a T head embodying my invention, with the air nipples attached; Fig. 2 is a central, vertical, longitudinal, sectional view of the T head, showing the operation of the device; and Fig. 3 is a detail view 4of one of the air nipples.
The T head is screw threaded onto a feed pipe 2, connected to the usual air tank or compressor. Screw threaded into each end of the head l is an externally and internally screw-threaded valve casing 8 provided with an outer circumferential iange t adapted to engage the outer face of the T head so as to make an air tight closure; and an end nut flange 5.
The inner end of thevalve casing 3 is provided with a chamber 6 of a truncated-cone shape for most of its length; but having its outer port-ion cylindrical. In the outer cylindrical portion of the chamber 6 isarubber ring 7 tightly fitted therein, forming a valve seat. The two seats are directly opposite each other, in each end of the head, as shown in Fig. 2.
Two ball valves 8 and 9 are provided, which are normally held on the above seats by the action of the coil spring 10 which eX- erts an outward pressure on each of the valves; and also by the pressure of the air on the inner faces of the valves.
To open the valve a corrugated air nipple 11 is provided on its inner end with a stirrup Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 31, 1913.
Patented Oct. 5, i914@ Serial No. 745,347.
l2 and screw-threaded to fit the internal screw-threads of either valve-casing 3. As the nipple is turned into the valve casing 3 the stirrup l2 engages the outer face of the balljvalve 9 as in Fig. 2, and unseats it against the action of the spring l0. As soon as the valve is unseated, the air will pass through the sides of the stirrup 12 and through the nipple 1l into the ordinary tube 13 attached thereto.
I n ease the valve drops down when pushed in it will rest on the upwardly slanting side of the chamber G, so that when the nipple l1 is unscrewed from thev valve casing, the v alve will be returned to its seat by the action of the spring 10 and held there by the spring and the pressure ofthe compressed air combined.
It is thought that the construction, operation, and use of the invention will be clear from the preceding detailed description.
Changes may be made in the construction, arrangement, and disposition of the several parts of the invention without in any wav departing from the field and scope of the same, and it is meant to include all such within this application wherein only a preferred form has been disclosed.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A T-head coupling for pipes having two opposite removable tubular screw-threaded parts, each of which is provided'at its inner end with an inwardly flaring chamber and an annular valve seat in the outer part of said chamber and internally screw-threaded beyond said seat, a pair of ball valves iitting the said seats a spring interposed between said valves and forcing them outward against said seats and a screw-threaded tubular valve opening device having a stirrup at its inner end and adapted to screw into either one ofsaid removable parts, also provided' with an outward integral extension adapted to protrude beyond said T-head and to receive the end of a tube. v
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
XYSTE LONGTIN.
