This invention relates to improvementsin toy bridges, vand has particular' reference to :l mechanical toy bridge.
The principal object of this invention is to produce a toy bridge for use in connection with toy trains or the like toys whereby the action of a. bascule bridge may be simulated.
Another object of this invention is to produce aV toy of this character' which is simple in construction, and therefore cheap to manufacture.
A further object is to produce a toy which is neat in appearance and one which will make a pleasing combination with the standard toy railroad equipment now upon the market. V
Other objects and advantages will be'apparent during the course of the following description. l

In t e accompanying drawings wherein ifor the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates a framework representing the bed and sides of a. stream or other similar channel. This frame 5 has abutments 6 a11d7 between which the bridge 8 is swung. e
The bridge portion is pivoted as at 9 to the frame 5 at a point adjacent the abutment 6. Positioned within the abutment 6" is a clock mechanism 11 having a spring 12 adapted to be tensioned by` a suitable keyI which is placed over the winding shaft 13, This spring 12'transn1its motion to a shaft 14 having a counter-weight 16 thereon. This shaft also carriesI a` disc 17 having notches 1S formed therein anddiametrically i opposite each other. To the disc 17 is secured a link 19 which is inturn pivoted to the bridge 8, as shown at 21.-V
il similar link 22 is connected to also mounted upon the shaft 14. The disc 17 has a latch 24 pivot-ed adjacent thereto,A which latchhas a dog 26 adapted vto enter one ofthe notches 18 in the disc.
A starting lever 27 is adapted to engage the-latch lever 24 for the purposeof pulling the dog out of the notch 18 Awhen it is desiredto start the clock mechanism.
The disc 22 hasformed thereon projections 29 and k31 ,which projections are adapted to alternately engage levers 32 and 33, respectively. The levers 32 andl 33 are positioned upon a shaft 28 carried upon` the side of the abutment 6. A rod 34 positioned parallel t-o the shaft 28 extends through the frame 5 and into the abutmentV 7 (see Figure 2). v
This shaft is provided with cranks 3G which in turn` extend upwardly. The links 37 terminate in a pointed end, engaging one end of a gate 38 pivoted as at 39. i
Itis of course understood that there is one of these gates atl each end of the bridge.
The shaft 34 is rocked through a link 4l extending from the lever 42 carried upon the shaft 28 through the lever 36.
The result of this construction is that after the toy Abridge has been placed in an operative position and the spring 12 tensioned, movement of the lever 27 will cause the dog 26 on `the latch 24 to be withdrawn from the notch 18 in which it is resting. The spring now serves to' give a half revolution to the shaft 14. Immediately upon the initial movement `of the shaft 14, the disc 23 will have one of its projections, as kfor instance the projection 31. engage the under surface of the lever 33 which will rock ,the shaft 28 and the rod 34 in the same direction. This will push up on the links 37 thus causing the gates 38 to move to the dotted line position of Figure 3.

This will leave the bridge in an open position as set forth in Figure 2.
By again operating the lever 27 and raising the dog 26, the next half revolution as above described will cause the bridge to return to its closed position, as shown in Figure l.
Just previous to the bridge arriving at its closed position, the projection 24 and the dise 23 Will engage the upper surface of the lever and move the shaft 28 and :'od 3l in such a direction that the links 3T will cause the gates 38 to move to an open position.
It will thus be seen that I have produced a very simple toy bridge wherein the mere Winding` of a spring and the actuation of a single lever will cause both the bridge to open and close, and also the gates to be automatically operated.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described, is to be taken as a preferred example of the same. and that various changes relative to the material, size, shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted to Without departingr from the spirit of the invention or the Scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:-
In a toy of the character described a pair of portable spaced abutments connected one to the other, a bridge portion pivotcd to one of said abutments and adapted to more into Contact with the other of said abutments, a gear train positioned Within one ot said abutments, said gear train having a sha t't, a plurality of discs carried on .said shaft., one ot' said discs havingr notches in the periphery thereof, a latch adapted to engage said notehes i'or the purpose of retainingr said dise against rotation, the other ol said dises having projections` thereon. a shaft extending between said abutments, gates positioned on said abutxnents, means tor actuating .said gates from said last mentioned shaft.y means tor rocking .said lastA mentioned shaft through a lever engaging .said projections formed on said disc and link connections extending between said first' mentioned dise and said bridge portion tor the purpose of actuating said bridge portion.
