UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PETER MUNZINGER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENN SYLVAFTIA, ASSIGNOR TO MORRIS, TASKER & 00., OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN MOUTH-PIECES FOR GAS-RETORTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 166,131, dated July 27, 1575; application filed June 28, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PETER MUNZINGER, of the city of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in the Construction of Mouth-Pieces for Gas- Betorts, of which the following is a specification:
The invention consists in the combination, with a retort mouth-piece, of a knife-edge contact-piece, a lid or cover, and a guard for the protection of the knife-edge contact-piece. It also consists in the combination, with a retort mouth-piece, of a lid or cover, an eccentric which turns in the loose end of a pivoted or hinged bar, and a cross-bar.
Figure 1 is a plan view. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the line 1 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a plan view of Fig. 3, the lid being removed.
A is a retort mouth-piece, and B a flange by which it is attached to the retort. O is a knife-edge projection around the mouth-piece, against which the lid D is applied. Its purpose, when in contact with the lid, is to make a perfectly close gas-tight joint. E is a flange at the end of the mouth-piece, or an extension It extends a suitable distance beyond the plane of the knife-edge (J, to guard and protect it from injury by contacting with the implements employed in charging and operating the retort.
G is an eccentric, a cam, or any curved surface capable of producing a variable pressure, pivoted in the loose end of the slotted bar H, which is hinged in the jaws 1 of the mouthpiece. When the lid D is in place against the knife-edge O, and the hinged cross-bar J is turned against the lid, its end or takes into the slot of the bar H, and is operated on by the cam G, the pressure exerted depending on the curve of the eccentric or cam and the inclination of its handle K. A screw, L, which passes through the cross-bar J, afi'ords additional pressure by pressing against the center of the lid. To open the lid the eccentric is reversed, and the bar H turned from the end of the bar J, which is then thrown back.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination of the retort mouthpiece A, knife-edge contact-piece (J, lid D, and the guard E, as shown and described.
2. The combination of the retort mouthpiece A, lid D, eccentric G, hinged bar H, and the cross-bar J, as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto sign my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
PETER MUN ZINGER.
