"111g provided for independently securing eachot the arms in its slot in any radially adjusted position} A further ob'ect'of the invention is to provide a cutter of the above mentioned character which will saveconsi'derable time and laborin cutting out washers from a blank,-the device at all times being positive and e'h'icient in its operation. i
A. still further object is to provide a cutting device of the above mentioned character which-is simple in construction, inexpensive, strong and durable and further well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed. a l
Other objects and advantages ofthe invention will become apparent from the following description taken in connection with the I accompanying drawing. 1
In the accompanying drawing forming part otthisapplication:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the. circular packing cutter embod ing my invention.
Figure 2 is a bottom p an View thereof.
Figure 3 is an end elevation.
Figure 4 is a side elevation of the tubular. stock. i 1
Figure 5 is a side elevation of the screw threaded plug and the centering point carried thereby, and
Figure 6 is a side elevation of a bit brace engaging member which may be employed in place of the threaded shank carrying a handle on its upper end.
In the drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred em:
bodiment of my invention, the numeral 1.
designates a tubular vertically disposed stock the upper and lower ends are internally threaded. In the present instance the outer cross sectional shape of thestock is hexagonal, although it is to be understood that I do not wishto limit myself to such shape. The stock 1 is formed with a pair of independent transversely extending slots designated by the numeralsQ and 3, respectively. The lower slot is substantially rec tangular in cross section, while the upper slot 3 isdove tailed in cross section, and this is clearly shown in Figure 4 of the drawing. The purpose of forming the slotsin this particular manner will be hereinafter more fully described.
Also forming an 1mportant part of the present invention are the cutter carrying arms 4 and-5 respectively, the same being of a suitable length and] formed at their outer ends with depending cutters 6 and 7, respectively. These arms 4 and 5, are disposed insuperposed relation and the lower arm 4 is substantially rectangular in cross section and is adapted for radial slidable movement through the rectangular shaped slot 2 formed in the lower end portion of the stock 1. The upper arm 5 is substantially dovetailed in cross section and is adapted for slidable movement through the dove tailed slot 3 also formed in the stock 1, and due to the arrangement of these stocks, the lower face of the uppermost arm 5 will be disposed in engagement with the upper faceoi' the 1 lower arm 4 andthis construction is clearly shown in Figure 1 of the drawing.
1 ations on I the side edges thereof as ,also clearly shown in Figure 1 whereby the arms may be properly adjusted in order to ascertain the properfsize of the washer which is to be cut from a blank when the device is in use.
An externally threaded plug such as is shown at 9 with reference more partlcularly to Figure 5 tin-the drawing is formed The arms 4 and 5are provided with'graduwith a heriagonal head 9 to facilitate the turning thereofland this plug is adapted to be threaded into the lower threaded end of the stock 1, and the upper end of the plug is reduced as at 10 for engagement with the bottom face of the portion of the lower arm 4 which is disposed within the slot 2 so that the upper face of this arm will be lockedin binding engagement with the shoulders 11 formed in the top otthe slot 2 whereby the arm 4 will be locked in its properly radially adjusted position against sliding movement with respect to the stock 1. i
Extending downwardly from the bottom of the threaded point 12. I
For the purpose of locking the upper arm against sliding movement, I provide the shank 13 which is adapted to extend downwardly in the upper open end of the tubular plug 8 is the centering stock 1. An enlarged threaded portion 14 face of the arm into binding engagement with the beveled sides of the dove tailed slot 3 formed in the stock 1. Furthermore, this handle provides a means for rotating the stock and the cutter carrying arms when the device is in use.
In using the device, the plug 8 is loosened and the arm at is radially adjusted to the required radius. The plug is then tightened for locking the lower arm 4 in its" properly adjusted position. The handle 15 is then loosened to disengage the lower end of the shank 13 from the upper arm 5 and the arm 5 is radially adjusted to the outer radius whereby the cutters 6 and 7 will be properly spaced from each other to form a washer of the desired size, and the handle 5 is then rotated in the reverse direction to secure the 7 arm 5 in its proper adjusted position.
actuating the handle 15 in one direction a rotary movement will be imparted to the stock 1 and the cutters G and 7 will out an annular packing ring from the blank when a complete circle has been made by. the
' stock 1.
In place of the shank 13 and the handle 15 and associated therewith may be employed the shank 16 which is formed at its upper end with a bit-brace engaging portion 17 Otherwise this shank is the same as the one heretofore described. With a shank of the construction just described, a bit-brace may be used in lieu of the handle for actu ating the device to effect the rotation thereof. A device of the above mentioned character may not only be used for cutting out washers, but can also be used for various other purposes as for example removing the top from a can or cutting circular members from wood stock. The simplicity of my device enables the parts to be readily and easily adjusted and furthermore will at all times be positive and eflicient in its operation.
While I have shown the preferred em- I bodiment of my invention it is to be understood that minor changes in the size, shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claim.
I clann as new is In a device of the class described, a tubular stock, provided with a pair of independent transverse slots in the lower end portion thereof, a pair of superposed arms slidable through the respective slots, a depending cutter on the outer end of each arm, means for adjustably securing the arms in their respective slots against sliding movement, said means comprising a plug threaded in the lower end of the stock and adapted to engage the portion of the lower arm which is disposed in the lowermost slot, a shank extending downwardly into the upper end of the stock and adapted to engage a portion of the uppermost arm which is disposed within the uppermost slot inthe stock, and a centering point extending dowmvardly from said plug.
In testimony whereof I aiiiX my signature.
\VILLIAM EUGENE ENDJEZZE.
