This invention-relates to annealing boxes such as are used in the manufacture or annealing of various materials and articles ';which are usually constructed of two or more sheets or plates of wrought metal.
The Welded annealing boxes heretofore made, when formed of two or more sheets 'or plates, were so constructed as torequire boxes as heretofore manufactured have not,

'The, general object of my invention is to so construct the box that no weld will occur at any corner or any point of stress.
. A further object -is toform the box from three separate plates, one of which plates forms both the top, which is preferably dished, and two opposed sides and flanges at each end, the other twoplates being welded to either end of the'body plate to complete the cover or box. 4
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying' drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a vertical transverse sectional view through an annealing pan or cover constructed in accordance with my invention;

Referring to this drawing, 10 designates the mainor body plate. This plate is preferably dished at its middle, as at 11, and is formed with the two sides 12 which are disposed at a 90 angle to the lane of this main plate 10, the sides joining the main plate by the curved portions 13. The main plate 10 and the sides 12 which are integral therewith are inwardly flanged, as at 14, to
define a rectangular opening 15 which extends downward to the extreme bottom of the annealing box or cover. The end flanges 14 are initially disposed at an angle greater than an angle of 90 to the top plate 10 and to the sides 12, as illustrated in Figures -1 and 2. This oblique angle of the flanges 14 is the angle initially'given to. these flanges.
Head plates 16 are disposed within these -flanges 14,as shown in Figures 1 and 2 and these head plates 16 overlap these flanges 14 and are welded thereto at 17. The welding of the flan e 14 to these head plates 16 brings this ange 14 from an oblique angle into a 90 angle, as shown in dotted lines in Figure 1. This welding causes the body andhead plates to become one congruous whole. Two lifting lugs 18 may be welded or riveted-to the side plates 12. i
While I have illustrated the top as dished t 11, I do not wish to be limited to this as he top might be otherwise formed. Furthermore, the annealing box may have either its sides and end portions flat-or corrugated and the top may be flat, upwardly embossed or corrugated as desired. 1
I do not wish to berlimited to the exact details of construction which are illustrated, as these might be changed in many ways without departing from the spirit of the invention.
v I claim 1. An annealing box having a top and opposed integral side walls, the top having downwardly extending flanges at its ends forming the opposed upper corners of the box and the lateral margins of the side walls being inwardly flanged, the flanges of the side walls merging into and being integral with the flanges of the top, and end plates welded to the top and lateral flanges, the joints formed by the welds being disposed entirely on the faces of the box in spaced relation to the corners of the box.
2. A method of making an annealing box or cover consisting in forming the body of the box to provide a top, two oppositely disposed sides, and integral flanges extending downward from the top at each end and inward from the sides at each end to form opposite corners of the box at the top thereof and the lateral corners of the box at the sides thereof, said flanges being initially disposed at an oblique angle to the sides and top and then welding head plates against the inner faces of the flanges and drawing the flanges into right angular relation to the sides and top respectively during the weld- 10 ving operation, the joints formed by the welds being disposed entirely on the opposite faces of the box and in spaced relation to the cornersv thereof.
