A. H. VANDAM WASHABLE FABRIC Filed Aug. 8, 1927 liilllli' llliL INVENTOR .fllfieriliwzndam BY 22 Z ATTORNEY WITNESSES /W%%M Patented Feb. 21, 1928.
UNITED STATES I PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT H. VANDAM, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO TURNER da VANDAM, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK. V
WASHABLE FABRIC.
Application filed August 8, 19527. Serial No. 211,533;
The present invention is concerned with the provision of a washable fabric in which suitable printed patterns are accentuated or supplemented by shadow effects on the fabric body or background.
The invent-ion is particularly concerned with the provision of a washable fabric suitablle for use as a shirting or pajama materia Objects of the invention are to provide a new fabric which permits the production of a number of unique and attractive designs by virtue of the special arrangement of white background, printed colored pattern, and the shadow design on the background which tends to set off the pattern.
Another object of the invention is to provide an unusual and attractive shirting fabric of this character which may be manufactured with comparative economy, and which may withstand numerous washings without fading of either the colored pattern or the shadow background.
With the above noted and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims. The invention may be more fully understood from the following description in connection with the accompanying drawings, whereinp I The drawing is a fragmentary plan view of a piece of fabric embodying the invention and showing one repeat of a design.
In the drawing I have used the referencecharacter 10 to designate the fabricbody which may be of cotton, silk, or cot-ton and silk combinations, such as are commonly used for shirting and pajama fabrics. The fabric is of such a nature that it is ordinarily lustrous, even when washed. The shadow background effects are produced by printing the fabric with a suitable gloss or lusterremoving agent, preferably combined with a tint. As illustrated in the drawing the shadow design consists of a solid square 11 arranged within a concentric hollow square 12.
The agent used for printing the fabric to produce the shadow background is preferably zinc oxide with which is combined a tint in the nature of a fast dye. The tint is preferably one which varies the original fabric color only slightly, so that the addition of the tint together with the removal stance the printed squares 13 are superimposed on the solid squares 11 of the shadow design. It is to be understood however, that the particular design illustrated forms no part of the invention, and that an infinite variety of shadow designs on color printed designs might be employedr For instance,
colored stripes might be used in connection with any appropriate shadow design, the invention being in no'way limited in this respect. It will be noted that in the finished fabric the printed design is augmented, and
in some instances accentuated by the shadow efi'ect behind it, and a tremendous variety of extrecinely attractive designs may be thus produce Obviously, various changes and alterations 30 might be made in the general form and arrangement of the parts described without departing from the invention. Hence I do not wish to limit myself to the details set forth,
but shall consider myself at liberty to make 5 suchchanges and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
ored glossy background, a shadow design on the background consisting of design areas printed with a gloss removing agent tinted with a fast dye of a shade but slightly different from the background color, and a 001- ored design overlying the shadow design.
2. A washable woven fabric including a glossy white background, a shadow design 1. A washable fabric including a flat 001- g on the background consisting of design areas printed with zinc oxide, slightly tinted with a fast (1 e, and a colored design printed over the shadbw design.
3. A method of producing fabrics which includes the step of printing on a lustrous white background with zinc oxide containing a fast dye to produce a lusterless shadow design which contrasts only slightly in color with the background. 7 i
