It is further required that when a train from the junior road is crossing the tracks of the senior road that the gate shall be locked across the tracks of the senior road. i The law further specifies that suitable signals be provided to indicate the position of the gate, which said signals usually consist of different colored lights tor use when the visibility is low and at night, and certain types or painted boards for use during the daylight.
It frequently happens that the flagman who opens the gate neglects to change the signals at the same time, with the result that serious accidents have occurred.
In order to prevent such-occurrences, I have devised a simple and effective means by which the signals automatically change with the opening and closing or the gate, so that it is impossible for the gate to be opened without the proper signal showing at the proper place.
Other objects and advantages of my invention will be disclosed in the. following specification, claim and drawings, in which Fig. 1 illustrates the application of my combined railway gate andsignal, showing the gate locked open for tree passage of a train on the main line; and, also, shows the vertically disposed arms of the signal'indi- V eating a clear track in both directions.
Fig. 2 shows that the track illustrated in Fig. 1 is closed and both the vertically disposed signal arms and the horizontal signals indicate that the track is closed.
Fig. 3 is a detailed view of the automatic locking device.
Fig. 4 shows in detail the manner in which the locking device may be secured by padlock.
Fig. 5 illustrates the manner in which the rotatable signal is hinged and supported against downward movement by a shoe.

As the gate must be normally locked across the junior road, the post 4 is provided with suitable locking mechanism, shown in detwo other opposite sides show a different color light.
The standard 1 is, also, provided at its upper end with four signal arms, two of which 7 and 8 are permanently disposed in a horizontal position, the other two 9 and 10 being permanently disposed in a. vertical position.
