This invention relates to stock barriers, and

'itsgeneral object is to provide a combined rablc and efficient in operation and service.

This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.

In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had. to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:

Figure 1 is a front view of the device forming the subject matter of the present invention and showing the. same in applied and open position.

Referring to the drawings in detail, the letter A indicates a ditch, B fence posts and G the wire of a fence which terminates with the post for providing a gate opening as will. be apparent and as shown in Figure 1.

The device includes base supports 1 which as shown are supported upon the opposite banks thereof. Arranged in parallelism wvith their ends disposed upon the base supports 51, area 'plurality'of cross pieces 2 which have fixed thereon parallel bars 3 arrangedat right angles thereto as best shown in Figure 2 of the 'drawings.- Secured t0, the oppositeends of the cross pieces 2 are strips i which are disposed in superposed relation with respect to the base supports and arranged between the base supports and strips are cover planks .5.

. The parallel bars are disposed inequidistantly spaced relation with respect to each other and are so spaced to an extent sulilcient to prevent. cattle from attempting to cross the same, but are suliiciently close together to allow motor vehicles to cross as will be apparent. K

In order to allow cattle to cross and also to provide a crossing which may be used by horse drawn vehicles, I provide a sectional rack' which cooperates with the parallel bars in a manner which will be presently apparent Arranged adjacent the ends of the strips l are strip hinges 6 which are of the usual fU-shaped configuration and terminate in apertured ears 7 through which pass suitable securing means for fixing the hinges to the strips as above set forth and as clearly shown in F igure 2 of the drawings. Each section of the rack includes side members 8 and 9, and the side members 8 are substantially semicircular in cross section and have their ends mounted in the strap hinges 6, and in order to prevent longitudinal movement of the side members 8 in said hinges, I provide right angle shape strips 10 which are 'ned to the strips iand have one of'their portions engaging the ends of the side members 8 as best shown in Figure 5 of the drawings. The side members 9 are substantially rectangular in cross section and have their ends recessed as at 11 to provide handles for lifting the ra ks from their closed position as shown in Figure 3, to their open position as shown in Figure 2. The sections of the rack also inelude spaced parallel bars 12 which are secured to said side members 8 and 9 in a manner whereby they will be arranged between the bars 3 when the sections are disposed in closed position, and. bridging the end bars 12 are converging braces 13.

From the above description and disclosure of the drawings, it will beobvious that I have "provided a combined barrier and bridge adapted to be arranged across a d1tch,'runway,- stream or the likeor can be disposed in a gate-way, so as to prevent cattle from crossing the same, but when it is desired that the cattle should cross or to use the same for horse drawnwehicles, the sections of the'rack are lowered so that the bars 12 cooperate with [the bars3 and'provide' a relatively smooth crossingsuriaceas 'Wlll be apparent.

Inorder to retain the sections of the rack in their raised position as best shown in Figure l,I'may provide a hook which may be pivotally secured to the fence posts Band are. adapted to receive the side members 9. i

It isthought from the foregoing description that the advantages and'novel features of myinvention will be readily apparent;

I desire it to be understood that I may make changes '1n'theconstruct1on and in: the coinbinatlon and arrangement of the several parts provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended-claim.

What I claim is A barrier and crossing of the character de-- scribed comprising a pair of base supports, cross pieces bridging the base supports and having the r ends secured thereto, parallel bars secured in'spaced relation with respect to each other and to said cross pieces, strips secured to'the ends of said cross pieces and in paralleli sni-with said bars, a sectional rack, side members included in said sectional rack, one side member of each section being subi stantially semi-circular in cross section and cngageable with the strips, bars secured 'to said side members in spaced relation and arranged thereon in a manner whereby they will be disposed between the bars first mentioned whenthe sections are arranged in one position and convergingbraces bridging some of the bars.
