'This invention relates-to locksand,more especially, to ypadloeks which may be used for various purposes towhich sach locks are adapted.
invention as pertaining Ito aopadlock Vin which the shackle is entirelyremovable fromv the lock body, it will be understoodthat the invention in all .offits aspectsis not to be limited to this type oflock, but is also ap# plieahle to padlocksofthe usual or anypr'eferredV type. i 1
One ob3ect of the Working parts of which areof simple form and inexpensive to `make and assemble, and at the same time provide` a look which is effective in`operationfandnnlikely` to get out of order. i
1 A Sau further `Object. of 1my inversin is .y to provide an improvedlockof theeharacprovidedtherefor.
A still further object of my` finvention is to provide an improved lock of thisoharacter, which shall have aconefvvay connection between the parts. of `the shackle *and the locking mechanismso that Whilethe shackle may `he insertedNintotho lockA without the use of the key, it will be automaticallylocked (therein and may` not-be removedln'ntil `the proper key isused to release it;
Another *object of the Qinventionw :is `"the provision of aisiniple lock ofthis character such that ai greatfnumberiof loekseanwhe made, each of which will `be operable hy 'different keys, While at the same time ,a mas- 'ter-key may be readily made :Whiohwill fit all of the locks. A
To these and other ends the invention consists `in the novel features and combination" of parts to he hereinafter deseribedfand claimed. y I y` Vp y i Y i In the accompanying drawings:

drawn from the lock case.
stop 3l may be provided upon the lock case to t'orm an abutment to limit the movement of the detents under the tension oi the springs 4when the shackle is y' entirely withdrawn from the case. A ward niay 'be secured to the lock case and the key is provided with the notch 33 to clear this ward and permit the properlkey to rotate freely when inserted in the key opening 34. It will be obvious. that by placing this ward at different positions in the lock or by changing its size, a numberoi' key changes may be provided. At the Vsame time a master key may readily be prepared for a. great many locks by merely providing the'key with a relatively wid-e notch 33,.,30 that it will clear any oi' the wards regardless'oi where they may be placed in the lock case.Y c
Whenthe key is inserted into the keyhole, as shown in dotted llines in Fig. 7, it will lie latwise between the overlapping Alugs upon the detents, the edges oi the key projecting Y respectively beyond the edges ot the lugs so that when the key is rotated, the sides thereof adjacent the edges engage theedges oi' the .lugs and move the upper vend-s of the detents It outwardly', as shownin Fig. 6, causing the vlower edges of these detents, which enter theratchet teeth inthe shackle, to move inward` lyand be witlidrawnsfrom the teeth to releasethe shackle and permit it to be with- As soon as the key isV removed, the detents at once assume their locked positions, due to the influence of the'sp'rings 26 and 27' so that when the shackle is re-inserted inthe `lock case, it is immediately engaged by the detents and docked in place.
It will be obvious that I Vhave provided a very simple and veiiective locking mechanism for locks of this character and that the locks are capable of being vmade with a large num- 'ber of key changes,"subject to the operation of a master key 'of simple'fcharacter. 'Y l While I have shown and described a pre- `ferred embodiment ofimy invention, it will be understood that itis not to be limited to 'all the details shown, but is capable oi modiiication and variation within 'the Vspirit of the invention andfwi'thin the scope ot the appended claims.
1. In a padlock, a lock case, a U-shaped 'shackle 'cooperating therewith, said shackle having ratchet teeth" upon the legs thereof, the opposite faces of said lock case being providedwith aligned openings so that the Alegs offthe shackle may be passed entirely through the case, a pair of detents pivoted -in the vvcase intermediate their ends, means upon Vone end of each ofthe detents for engaging the ratchet teeth on the shackle, .said
detents pivoted intermediate their ends within the lock case, andhaviug means at one of the ends thereoii to engage the ratchet teeth on the shackle, theoth'er'ends of said detents being provided with over-lapping lugs, and means to engage said lugsto simultaneously withdraw both of said detents from 'engagement with the shackle.
3. Ina padlock, a case. having aligned.
.openings in opposite 'faces thereof, `a "shackle having legs to enter said openings and pass entirely through the case, 'said legs being -provided vwith ratchet teeth ontheirop'posz j Ving surfaces, a pair of detents pivoted inter;
mediate their ends within the case, means at one end ofeach of the detents to effect 'a oneway variable engagement Vwith the ratchet vteeth of thesha'ckle, said detents being providedat theirother ends with overlapping lugs adapted to be engaged by a key to move 'said detents towithdraw them from 'enga-gement with the shackle. i
d. In combination, a lock case, a shackle completely detachable tromthe case and provided with arms i'nsertable thereinto, detents pivoted in theca-se intermediate their ends,
ut adapted at one vend thereof to engage said shackle, each of said detents 4being i'ormedy at its other end with a projecting lug, said lugs being disposed in spaced overlapping positions, and adapted to receive a key therebetween and adapted upon the rotation 'thereof to move theadjacent ends of the detents outwardly and thereby, move the opposite ends of the detents inwardly to dis engage themV from the shackle.
5. In combination, a lockbase, a shackle completely detachable from the case and provided with arms insertable thereinto, detents pivoted in the case intermediate their ends, but adapted at one end thereof to engage said shackle, .each of said detents being vformed Vat Yits other end with a projecting lug, said lugs being disposed in spaced overlapping positions said lugs being adapted to receive a key Vtherebetween and adapted'upon the rotation thereof to move the adjacent ends of the detents outwardly and thereby move the opposite ends of the detents inwardly to di'sengagefthem `from the shackle, and a ward secured lto the lock case and adapted to cooperate with a notch in a key.
6. In a padlock, a Acasefa shackle having legs designed to be slidably received-inthe case and provided with notches, detents pivoted in the case, each of said detents comprsing side members l. connected by upper4 and lower cross-bars, the lower cross-bar of each detent being adapted to engage in a notch upon the shackle; i i
7.111 a padlock, vaca/se, a shackle having ,each detentbeing adapted toengagein a notch upon `the'shackle, and operating lugs securedat the upper ends of Athe detents and adapted to be engaged by the key to release the detentsfrom the shackle.
8p. Ina padlock,v a lock case, ayu-shaped shackle cooperating therewith, said shackle having a Series of `ratchet teeth uponthe legs thereof, the o posaefcesfof said 10c-k case being provide with aligned openin s sothat the legs of the shackle `may be passe entirely through the case, an opening for a key at the opposite end ofsaid case from which said shackle is inserted, a` pair ofdetents mounted in caid case opposite one yanother and extending towards said shackle and the end of the casing having the key opening there# in and adapted to engage theteeth on the shackle, said detents eing arranged to receive `a key therebetween and" upon rota-F tion of the key to be disengaged from said shackle. y Y
`ln witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this` 18 `day of Januar-y, 1924.
