1. ALLAIN I PADLOCK Fled Jue 14. 1923 mim Patented July 29, 1924.
vl.ll`\ll'l"ED STATES JACQUES ALLAIN, or MONTREAL, QUEBEC, CANADA.
PADLOCK.
Application filed .Tune 14, 1923. Serial No. 645,425.
T all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JACQUES ALLAIN, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Montreal, Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Padlocks; and l do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,
and exact description of the invention, suchr as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention pertains to a combination lock of the type in which the latch releasing member is locked through the instrumentality of spring pressed pins extending from the body of the lock therein.
The improvement resides in a two part pin,`one part being known as the pin and the other part as the follower. The shackle retaining member or bolt is movable by means of a plug rotatably inserted in the body. The pins extend from the body into the plug and are in alignment with spring pressed followers within the body. The key which is insertable within the Vplug has notches formed therein in such a. manner as to leave clear the plane of division between the plug and -the body. In other words, the contacting ends of the pins and followers are disposed in this plane when the proper `key is inserted Vinto the plug, whereby the latter may be rotated to act upon the bolt.
- The invention is fully disclosed in the following description and in the aecompanying drawings in which: Y
Figure 1 is an exterior view of a padlock constructed according to the invention.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof;
Figure 3 is a section on the line 3 3 of Figure 2;
Figure l is a view corresponding to Figure 2', showing the shackle in open position; and,
Figure 5 is a section on theline 5 5 of Figure l.
The device comprises a body 10, at one corner of which is pivoted a shackle 11 which is acted upon by a spring 12 tending to force the free end of the shackle out of the body. This member has a notch 13 formed in its inner end and engageable by a spring pressed sliding bolt 14 having a recess 15 in its lower side. A rotatable fr, p
p Within theV body is mounted a plurality of slidable followers 19 adapted to move into the apertures 20 formed in the plug and,x extending into the slot 17. These followers are influenced by springs 21 tending. to urge them inwardly. InV advance of these followers are disposed separate pins 22 which may Abe of unequal lengths. These pins are receive-d in the apertures 2O and are in alignment with ythe followers 19 when the lock is not open and the key is not in the slot. Additional spring pressed followers 23 may be provided in the body with balls 22 corresponding to the pins 22.
As shown in Figure 2, the key must be of such construction that when inserted into the plug, it will displace t-he pins in such a manner that the ends thereof which contact with the followers will form a straight line in the plane of division between the plug and the. body. At the same time the followers 23 areA moved away from the plug which can now be rotated by the turning of the key. As the plug is turned, t-he lug 18 nieves the holt 14; out of the notch 13, n
and the shackle 11 springs open, as illustratedV in Figure fl.
The various pins and followers may be inserted through the sides ofthe body, the openings for the pins and springs being "subsequently closed by slides 24. A. groove 25 is formed partially upon the circumference of the plug, and is adapted to receive a pin 26Vpassing through the body. By means ofthe pin the extent of rotation of the plug is limited.
VV-hile a specific embodiment of the invention has been illustrated and described, i-t is to be understood that various alterations in the details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as indicated by the appended claim.
Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is A lock comprising a body and a shackle, a bolt adapted to lock the shackle within the body, a movable'element within the body adapted to draw said bolt out of engagement with the shackle, said element having a longitudinal key slot, pins slidably mountto the opposite edge of said slot, and balls i ed in the movable element und adapted fo mounted in the movable element and eneXtend into the body and into one edge gagged by the last named followers. 10 of the slot, spring pressed followers mount In witness whereof I have hereunto set 5 ed in the bod57 and adapted to act on said my hand.
pins, additional spring pressed followers mounted in the body and adapted to extend JACQUES ALLAIN.
