WALTER O. LUM, OF YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO BLG-FRY INCORPORATED, OF
SYRACUSE, NEW YORK, A'CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
FAN BLOWER.
Application led December 2, 1924. Serial No. 753,472.
M invention relates to improvements in fan blowers of the type usually used in hot air drying machines and the like.l The object ot' iny device is to create ablower of this type which will be very simple and cheap in construction and at the same time will have a high mechanical efficiency. My fan type construction is an improvement over the sii-called Sirocco type.
The further object of my invention is to provide a blower of this type which will be very rugged and at the same time lend itself to be readily balanced and develop little distortion under running conditions. My further purpose is to provide a construction which will permit the assembly of my fan blower so that the static bala-nce and the dynamic balance can be obtained in the simplest and most inexpensive manner.
Furthermore it is my object to design a blower of this ty e which will permit drawingy air from boti sides of the blower housing which in turn permits drawing a portion of the air through the motor o a drying machine which in turn servesy to keep the motor cool and also to deliver the motor heat to the air stream thereby supplementing the heat unit in the typical hot air drying device. 'In order that the invention may be more fully understood reference is made to the accompanying drawings in which like letters refer to like parts.
Figure 1 is an end elevation of my de# vice.
Figure 2 is a plan view showing a phantom section around the hub.
Figure 3 is a side elevation ofla portion of an outer rim of my device showing angu- 'lar spaeings'of the vane connections whilst Figure 4 is a plan view of the same. y
Figure 5 is a side elevation of Ia portion of the central section of my device showing the vane slots and angular spacings whilst Figure 6 is a'plan view of the same.
Figure 7 shows an enlarged development in side elevation of a single vane or bucket in my device whilst Figure 8`is an end view of the same.
In constructing my device I use two identical side Ydiscs or sections A and I.
Referring to Figure 1. the ends of the vanos or buckets B are shown in dott-ed lines. C and D are the holes in the end sections A and I where the end portions X and Y of each bucket are connected' whilst l" is an empirical angle made between the center lin'e ot' the disc and the line throughthe center ot the holes C D which is designated by the letter E. This angle I have worked out by numerous careful experiment-s and the result which I-have determined develops a blower giving very great velocity with a minimum noise.
Referring to ,Figure 2, J is a key-way for an auxiliary drive coupling. G is the end of the axis bearing or hub K whilst L is a shoulder holding the whole, turning with the shaft M, whilst I is the other outer section.
In Figure 3, O is another empirical angle made by lines from the center of rotation oint to each of the vane supporting holes 1n the outer sections, whilst line N represents one of the lines through the center point ot' rotationA and the inner vane support-ing hole.
Referring to Fig-pre '5, T is the axial hole in the central disc ,.P being the circle assing through the base of the slots S S, Q. representing one center line of said slots and R being the angle between lines Q and the center line of rotation where same cuts the outer circle of the central disc, the angle l. being another empirical angle.
Referring to Figure 7, one enlarged bucket B is shown with the slot V which feeds into the slots S of the center disk said slot V does not cut either edge of the bucket or blade B whilst end protrusions X and Yfeed into the holes C and D in the end sections, U and `W batting solidly up against the end section whilst in Figure 8, line Z represents a radius `of curvature. of each bucket. It will be seen that my device comprises a center disc or plate I-I which carries a series of buckets in slots in its periphery and that these buckets are held in place by annular side rings attached to the bucket ends. The buckets themselves are provided with crosswise slots V at a -center point to locate them properly on the centraldisc. My hub may be integral with thecentral disc H or may be :i separate piece attached thereto in suitable. nianner. It will appear that the hub of my blower supports the central disc, and that the central disc supports the vanes, and that the varies support t-he two outer annular rings.
Having thus described my invention what l claim and desire to secure by United 5ta-tes Letters Patent is:
l. In a fan blower, the combination of a shaft, a hub for said shaft, a circular central dise for said hub containing a series of spaced open slots about its periphery, curved blades having closed slots ata central section, and registering with said slots insaid central disc and having projections at each end, annular outer rings containing means for receiving a'nd holding the projections of 'said curved blades, all as and for the. purposes hereinbetore described.
2. In a t'an blower, the combination of a. shaft, a hub for said shalt, a circular cen' tral dise l'or said hub containing a series of spaced opcnslots about its peripher', the center line ol' said slots being at an angle to the radial lines` of said disc, curved blades having closed slots at a central section, and registering with said slots in said central disc and having projections at each end thereof, annular outer-,rings containing means for receiving and holding the projections of said curved blades, all as and for the purposes hereinbefore described.
3. In a ian blower, the combination of a shait, a hub for said shaft, a circular central disc for said hub containing a series of spaced open slots about its periphery, the center line of said slots being at an angle with the radial lines of, said dise, curved blades having closed slots slotted at a central section, and registering with said slots in said central disc, and having projections at each end, two annular outer rings, each containing an outer and an inner series of holes to receive project-ions at the ends ofv said blades, the radial lines connecting the centersof said inner holes making angles with the radial linesof said outer holes, all as and for the purposes liereinbei'ore described.
1n witness whereof, I have 'sinned my naine to these speeilieations this 19ti day of `*elite-wher, 1924.
