MEANS FOR TRIMMING AND FOLDING FABRIC EDGES.
Application filed January 6, 1927. Serial No. 159,289.
edges to keep the said fabric from being displaced while it is being trimmed.
Another object of the invention is to provide means in a device of this nature whereby a portion of the fabric along the edges thereof may be folded over and creased to form a hem thereat.
A further important object of the invention is to provide a device of this nature simple and inexpensive in construction and yet efficient in its operation.
Other important and novel features in construction will become apparent as the specification proceeds.
In the drawings forming apart of this specification Figure 1 is a top planview partly broken away of one embodiment of my invention.
Figure 2 is a side view of same looking from the bottom of Fig. 1.
Figure 3 is a ,fragmental view of same looking from the right of Fig. 1 and Figure 4 is a similar view to Fig. 3 with the different parts shown in their operated position.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 5 in dicates a table top to which may be secured by means of screws 6, a plate or leaf 7 to which is hingedly secured at the front end thereof a trimming and folding table 8, comprising a plurality of members 9 and 10, made of angle iron suitably spaced apart by a spacing member 11 to form a slot 12, the object of which will presently be described.
At the left hand end of the plate 7 I have provided a crease forming member 13 hingedly secured thereto, normally resting in a vertical or upright position against the top of the table 5. This member 13 is provided at the bottom end thereof with a foot or supporting member 14 adapted to support and maintain the said member 13 in upright position when so desired.
To the member 13 there is hingedly secured a gaging and clamping plate 16 normally held in the position shown in full lines in Figs. 1 to 4 by springs 17 and 18, one end of which is anchored on a pin 19 extending between the hinge-forming brackets 20 secured to the plate 16, and the opposite ends'of the said springs are secured to pins 21 projecting from the member 13. The clamping plate 16 is maintained in the open position just described by a lug 22 on two of p the hinge-forming brackets 20 normally being drawn against lugs 23 projecting from two of a series of bearings 24 forming the other hinge members upon which the plate 16 is rotated. A pin 25 protruding from the plate 13 is adapted to fit into a-hole or opening 26 in the plate 7 to aline the'said member 13 when it is rotated on a'hinge27 into the Fig. 1 position. While I have shown and described the said member 13 as being hingedly connected to the plate 7, it may, if desired, be made independent of the said plate and in that case it is provided with an additional lower pin 25 adapted to fit into a hole or opening 26 in the plate 7 when used.
The device just described may be used wherever it is desired to trim and fold over the edge of a sheetof fabric to form a hem, but is especially designed for use in connection with the formation of hems along the edges of window shades and the operation thereof is as follows: i
A layer or a plurality of layers of fabric 30 is spread over the table 5 with the front edgesv 31 overlying the angle iron members 9 and 10 and extending beyond the slot 12 formed between them. The hinged upright member 13 carrying with it the clamping late 16 is then rotated about itshinge 27 into the full line Fig. 4 position by pulling downwardly on the said member through an opening 13 of the member 13 provided for this purpose. The fabric will be tightly held from shifting by the tension of the spring 17 and the weight of the said members. knife 32 is then drawn across the fabric above the slot 16 which forms a cutting groove or die and along the forwardstraight edge of the plate 16 which is in line with the inner edge of the slot 12, and the edges 31 which are usually ragged or crooked are cut off or trimmed to form a straight line. After the edges are thus trimmed. the ex tending cutting table formed by the angle iron members 9 and 10 is revolved around its hinges by pulling on ahandle 33 secured thereto until it is brought into the dot and dash position indicated in Fig. 4. In this position, thefabric will be creased along the front beveled edge 34 of the member 13 by claim as new is:
p 1. In fabrietrimming and folding device, a plate, a fabric cutting table having a slot. therein and hingedly supported on the plate, and a fabric clamping plate hingedly secured to the plate and co-operating with the slot in the cutting table to form guiding and'ga'ging means for trimming the fabric.
2., In a fabric trimming and folding device, a plate, a fabric cutting table having a 1 slot therein hingedly secured for rotation to the plate at one edge thereof a member hingedly connected for rotation to an adjacent edge of the plate, provided with a creasing edgeadapted to coact with the tutting table when rero'li'ed to fold the fabric a clamping member pivotally secured to the creasing edge containing member adapted to coact with the slot in the-cutting table to form guiding and gaging means for trimming the fabric. and a spring 'exerting a tension on the clamping member to prevent accidental displacement of the fabric while being trimmed. i a Y i v 3 In a-fabriefolding and trimming de- A iee. a stationary membenand a plurality of clamping memhers'hingedly secured to "each i\ 'iee, a stationary member, to be revolved downwardly over the stationits hinge.
7%. In a fabric folding and trimming-dea member adapted ary member and hingedh' se; ured thereto to form, when so ZQVOlYOd, clamping means for the fabric while it is being trimmed. and a recond member ada 'ited to he revolved about and hingedly secured to the stationary memher to coact with a ean of the ri-lamping member to provide creasing and folding means when the said second member is so revolved.
In a fabric trimming and folding device, a stationary plate, a trimming table secured to the plate, a member hingedl connected for rotation to the fixed plate adapted when so rotated to overlie the fixed plate and the trimming table to providea fabric trimming gage, and means on the hingcd'plate f'il clamping the imitcrial thcrchelwecn and the trimming table when the said hinged member is rotated to trimming position.
"6. In a deviceof'the naturedescribed, a stationary plate, a clamping member hing edlrsecured for rotation to one edge of the r stationary plate anda table similarly scoured to'an adjacent edge of the plate. the said clamping member and table providing fabric folding means when rotated.
1 In testimony whereof I hereunto allia my GEORGE SCHULER. a,
