Each of the jaw supports is provided with 21. flat thrust bearing plate 26 against which the jaws 26 are rockingly supported. These jaws are provided wi h downwmrdly proiectingz arms 27. As in my said application for Letters Patent, the jaws are actuated by a pinion 31 mounted on the uprights and coacting with a rack 32 to the upper end of which the arms 97 of the jaws are connected by the links 33. The links are connected to a cross member 34- projecting from the rack and engaging the ways in the uprights.
The jaws are provided with jaw faces above the plane of their axial centers and with rectangular slot-like recesses 36 below these jaw faces.
The fastener holder 37 is of general T- shape and is provided with a series of trans-- verse slots 38 adapted to receive a series of the fasteners 39, the fasteners being retained in the holder by a longitudinal pin it).
The fastener holder has curved bearing portions ll on the lower sides of its arms and curved bearing portions l2 on the upper sides thereof, these bearing portions being arcs of the same circle and engaging; the bottoms and tops respectively of the recesses in the jaws so that as the jaws rock on their supports, the fastener holder is always maintained in the same relation relative to the faces of the jaws.
To properly center the fastener holder, I provide a pair of plunger-like centering members -13 which are mounted for vertical movement in the vertical bores id; in the uprights 5, coiled springs l5 acting to urge these centering members yieldingly upward.
The retaining clips 46 are mounted on the uprights 5 to engage flattened portions it? on the members e13, the shoulders L8 at the bases of these flattened portions constituting stops limiting the upward movement of the centering members at their upper ends.
The centering members are provided with projecting lugs -29 which engage slots 50 in the fastener holder. Through one of these slots, I arrange a pair of spacing pins 51 by means of which the holder may be longitudinally positioned.
\Vith the parts thus arranged, the hooks are supported as they are forcedinto the work indicated at 52 in such a manner that the desired curvatiu'e at the bip'ht maintained on all of the hooks. l urther, the prongs are set at predetermined angles in the work so that a maximum of pulling strength is secured without cutting or tearing the belt.
I have illustrated and described my improvements in an embodiment which I have found very satisfactory in practical use. I have not attempted to illustrate or describe certain modifications or adaptations which I contemplate as I believe this disclosure will enable those skilled in the art to embody or adapt my imprm'emcnts as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as no Y and desire to secure by Lctters Patent, is:
