GUSTAVE LIDSEEN END WALTER 1. BEST, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
HAM BOILER.
Application filed. July 3, 1828.
This invention relates to a ham boiler or the like and concerns itself primarily with the superstructure which is designed to maintain thehaan under pressure.
It iscan object of this invention to provide such a. superstructure in which the compression springs that act on the pressure head may be compressed without the aid of an extra pressure applying device before the superstructure is applied. to the boiler, and in which the compression of the: springs can be slightly relieved for independent action after the superstructure has been applied.
The invention comprises the novel struc ture and combinations hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out and defined. in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate a preferred embodiment of this invention and in which similar reference numerals refer to similar features in the different views:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectionalviewof the apparatus taken upon the line I-I of Fig- 2 ure 2.
3 TIL-III of Figure 2..
Figure 4 is a: fragmentary detail View,
illustrating a modified manner of attaching the superstructure to the boiler proper.
Figure 5 isa sectional view upon. the line VV of Figure 4.
Asshown on the drawings:
As illustrative ofthis invention, there isshown a receptacle 1 which constitutes the boiler proper. Suitable ratchet bars 2 are attached upon the ends of the boiler; The superstructure of the boiler comprises a pressure-head 3 having a downwardly turned margin. Spaced standards 4 rise from the pressure head. Each standard consists of a pair of contiguous fiat bars provided with attaching flanges or lugs 5 riveted to the pressure head. The superstructure further comprises a channel like anchoring member 6 having pawls 7' pivoted thereto tor engaging the ratchet bars 2. The pawls 7 have a ratchet engaging hook 8 upon their lower ends for co-action with the teeth of the ratchet bars 2. The hooks 8 are bevelled upon their outer surfaces for readily slipping past the teeth of the bar.
Figure 2 is a top plan. view of the appa- Serial No. 120,295.
A modified form of ratchet mechanism is shown inFigure 4;. In this form a suitable bar 9 is pivoted at each end of the channel member 6. A pawlv 10 is pivoted upon the lower end of the bar 9 for engaging a ratchetbar 11 which constitutes the outer wall of a casing 12 attached to the endf of the boiler 1, the casing 12 forming a pocket or sheath into which the bar .9 extends. The anchoring member 6 is provided with suitablees-lots tor slidably receiving the standards- 45 which are connected to the channel member by toggle mechanism. Each toggle mechanism comprises a pair of parallel links 13 which are anchored at their lower ends to a pairot angle clips 1% on the member 6 by a bolt or rivet 15, the shank of which passes thru an elongated slot 16 (Figure 1) the standard 4-. Each slot 1 6 has an ancuate entrance at its upper'end and a notch 17 in the rear wall in arcuate alinement with said entrance.
The upper ends of each pair of links 135 are connected to the ends of a pair of angular operating members orarms 18 by pivot: pins 19 which are so located as to oscillate upon the radius of the arcuate entrance tothe slots; 1.6. Each pair of. arms 18 is pivoted to a" standard lby a pivot pin 20 which is also. the: center of the arcuate entrance to the slot in; such standard. A. link21 connectstheupper ends of the angular armsv 1 8.. One pair of arms 18 is extended beyond its pivot point and a' sheath 22 is attached: to such: extended endsfor receiving an operating handle or lever. A coiled compression spring 23 surrounds each standard 4. These springs are confined between the pressure head 3 and the channel member 6 which forms a partial housing therefor. Obviously, when the channel member 6 is anchored to the boiler and. the pressure head 3 is pressing on a ham, the springs it releas d: from locked position will exert a resilient force upon the pressure head.
In using this apparatus, the superstructure is removed, a ham is placed in the boiler, the lever in the sheath 22 is pressed downwardly for swinging the pivots 19into the notches 17 which is at a point beyond dead centerwhereby a locking action is secured between the parts. As the pivots 19 are thuswise moved inwardly and the toggle is straightened. he-pressure head 3 and channel mom her 6 will move relatively toward each other for compressing the springs 23. In the past, a separate device was used to compress the springs. This invention obviously eliminates such a device.
When the springs have been compressed and locked in compressed position by the toggles mechanism swinging beyond dead center, the superstructure is applied tothe boiler; the pawls 7 being engaged with the ratchet bars. Of course, the superstructure will be manually pressed upon the ham. When the superstructure has been tl'iuswisc secured, the lever in the sheath 22 will be elevated for breaking the toggles as shown :in Figure 1, whereby the compressed springs 23 will be released for acting on the pressure head while the ham is being boiled.
From the foregoing it will be appreciated that in thedevice involving this invention,
nofextra pressure device is req'uircdto compress the springs, since it is only nece; ary to operate the lever in the superstructm'e to do so. Consequently, not only is a great'deal of time and labor saved, but also the cost and expense 01. extra pressing mechanism is eliminated.
We are aware that many changes may be made, and numerous details of construction may be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles of this inven tion, and we therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted hereon, otherwise thannecessitated by the prior art.
We claim as our invention:

and a connection between said members com prising a swin 'able element operable for compressing said yielding means and simultaneously-locking said members against relative movement.
