UNITED STATES JOHN H. ANDERSON, OF ST. FAUL, MNNESTA.
PORTFOLIO.'
Application filed August V26, 1922. Serial No. 5511,514.
The object of my invention is to provide a portfolio in which letters and papers of various lrinds can be kept in indexed order and readily accessible at any time.
A further object is to provide a portfolio in which provision is made for conveniently carrying letter-heads and envelopes, pens, pencils, and other articles for use in correspondence. n y
A further object is to provide a port-folio having means for holding catalogs or pamphlets in place and. y i
A further and particular object is ,to pro* vide a portfolio adapted to receive the leaves or sheets and index of an ordinary letter file, such as is in general use for tiling purposes.
Other objects of the invention will appear' from the following detailed description;
The invention consists in various constructions and combinations all as hereinafter' described and pointed out in the claims. n
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification,
v Figure l is a perspective view proved portfolio ready for use.
Figure 2 is a viewrshowing the cover removed and the preferred means for fastening the leaves in the case.` y
Figure 3 s a detail view showing the leaf or division` plate fastening meansf Figure 4 is a perspective view showing the portfolio open, and the means for holding the leaves in place therein.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the portfolio closed, ready for carrying from place to place, and
Figure 6 is a side view of the same.
In the drawings, 2 represents one of the side walls of thev portfolio, 3, the end walls, and 4l, the back or rear wall made preferably of wood to provide a non-yielding const-ruction, or any other suitablematerial, such as stiff leather or strawboard, or even a light metal may be used ifpreferred,
5, is the cover forming the other side wall hinged to the rear wall 4, and adapted to clos one side of the portfolio, and having an e`X- tension 6 at its outer end, which when the portfolio is closed, forms the top thereof; this extension being preferably of wood, con'uaaratively thick, and having preferably a curved outer surface 7. When the cover is closed, the edge of this extension will rest upon the upper edge of the wall 2 on the opposite side of the portfolio, and effectually of my `imclose the same and prevent the ent-rance of dust and dirt therein. INhen this cover is thrown back, the whole interior and Contents of the portfolio are exposed.
The rear wall of the case is provided with a T slot 8, extending transverselyof its mid dle portion, and the leaves of the tile 9 placed in the case have T-shaped tongues 10 thereon which are adapted to enter the slot 8 and hold the leaves in place until such timeias it is desired to remove the tile from the case, A plate 11 is fastened to the rear wall of the case and overhangs the inner edges of the leaves, and to this plate, the outer leaf or cover 9d of the file is hinged. `The plate 1l is comparatively stiff and prevcntsthe leaves of the file frombecoming accidently separated from the slot 8, while the portfolio is in use. The file is indexed in the usual way, corresponding to an ordinary letter lile, and the user of the portfolio can place nis papers therein under the appropriate filing` let-ter und have immediate and convenient access thereto whenever desired. Correspondence of all kinds can be kept in the file. both the letters received, and those answered, and memoranda, bills, contracts, o1"

I prefer to provide bars 12 fastened to the wall 2, dividing` the interior intok narrow compartments 13 and 1li. on one side of the file; the former being vadapted to receive envelopes, and the latter, letter-heads.
A plate 12a is fitted into the case upon the bars 12 and spaced thereby from the wall 2 to aid in holding the envelopes andletterheads in place in the compartments 13 and lil. These compartments may, if preferred, be used for the convenient carrying' of photographs, pamphlets` or trade catalogs.
Partitions 15 are also provided within the Y casing forming pockets 1G in which stamps, pencils, pens, matches, and various other small articles can be conveniently carried and readily accessible whenever desired.
The cover 9d can also be used as a bulletin sheet on which price-lists and data of various lrinds may be fastened for convenience of reference, and on the inside of thecover I prefer to mount a strap 17 of flexible material under which various articles such as catalogs, pamphlets, etc., may be carried. On the outer surface of the wall 2, `straps 17 are mounted under which newspapers,
Vzo
magazines, and JEhe like can he carried. For holding the portfolio in its closed position, I provide :i stra-p 18 secured at `one end to the Wall 2 ond havinge. key controlled loch ing means et 19, and preferably a button 2O is provided on the extension or plate G, and) adapted ifo enter e Socket 21 in the strop.
This` is a measure of safety toprevent the Vporizion `eccure -l to the cese end odapted to swing over `end" about the extension, Suid cxtension and strap hovinpmenne enabling' them to he`deincheloljiT connected.
