LOGOMOTIVE.
Application jled aug-ust; 11, 1926. Serial No. lfh.`
My invention relates to certain improvements in the construction of the smoke-box end ot a locomotive boiler and to the cylinder structure.
The invention isvparticularly adapted to locomotives oi the three-cylinder type.
One object oit the invent-ion is to so construct the smoke-box end of the boiler as to allow the central cylinder ot the threecylinder saddle to project a considerable distance Within the circumferential line oit the smoke-box end ot the boiler.
A further object of the invention is to so design the cylinder structure that the saddle is separated by the central cylinder of the structure, and supports the locomotive boiler on each side ot the centre.
In the accompanying drawings:
Fig. 1 is a transverse sectional view on the line 1 1, Fig. 2, illustrating my improvements in locomotives;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view on the line Q-2, Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a detached perspective vieiv of the plate closing the opening in the bottom ot the smoke-box of the boiler.
1 is the boiler ot the usual type, having a smoke-box Q. 17 is the front tube-sheet. The bottom ot the smoke-box section ot the boiler is cut away at e, and a segmental reinforcing plate 3 is secured in position Within the smoke-box as clearly shown in the drawings.
The opening o is of suiiicient size to allow the central cylinder section l of the cylinder cast-ing 5 to extend Within the circumterential line ot the smoke-box, and the portion 6 ot the casting, containing an exhaust passage 7, terminates within the smoke-box and supports the ordinary nozzle structure (not sho-Wn).
In order to close the opening in the bottom of the smoke-box, a shaped plate 8, such as shown in Fig. 3, is mounted Within the .smoke-box and riveted or otherwise tastened thereto. In the present instance, the plate has a flange 9, and rivets pass through this iiange into the body ot the smoke-box casing. Other fastening means may be resorted to Wit-hout departing from the essential ieatures oi: the invention. The plate 8 is also secured to the extension 6 ot the cylinder casting by bolts 11.
The cylinder structure 5 in the present instance is made in one piece, and `formed in this structure are the tivo side cylinders 12 and the central cylinder (l. Also termed in the casting are the valve-chests 18 tor the two side cylinders and the valve-chest llfor the central cylinder. The curved saddle portions 15 are located on each side ot the central cylinder and are bolted or otherwise secured to the boiler structure. The cylinder structure rests upon the side trames 16 and is secured thereto in the ordinary manner.
By this invention the diameter ol: the boiler can be increased and the height ot the cylinder structure can also be materially increased without extending beyond the clearance line oi the locomotive.
1. The combination in a locomotive, oi a cylinder structure having a central cylinder; a boiler' having a smoke box section; an opening in the smoke box section to allow the central cylinder ot the cylinder structure to extend Within the circumferential line of the boiler; exhaust passages terminating Within the smoke box; and a shaped plate extending over the cylinder structure and perforated for the passage ot that por tion ot the structure through which the exhaust passages extend, said plate being mounted Within the smoke box and secured to the boiler and to the cylinder casting.
2. The combination in a cylinder casting having side cylinders and a central cylinder, the casting having an exhaust passage extending above the central cylinder; a locomotive boiler having a smoke box at one end; an opening in the bottom oi the smoke box 'for the central cylinder structure; and a plate extending over the cylinder structure, said plate having an opening for the passage oil that portion ot the cylinder structure containing` the exhaust passage, said plate being flanged at each end and each side and secured to the boiler and to the cylinder structure.
3. The combination ot a cylinder structure having a central cylinder and segmental side saddles; a boiler having a smokebox section located above the cylinder structure, the lower portion of the smoke-box having a reinforcing plate; an opening in the plate and in the bottoni ot the smokebox section ot the boiler; and a shaped plate closing said opening and having a central opening therein through `which extends that i fill portion of the saddle structure to which an exhaust nozzle is attached.
4. The combination in a locomotive, of a cylinder structure havingr a central cylinder;
, a boiler having a'smoke-box section, said seotion having an opening at the bottom to allow the central cylinder of' the cylinder structure to extend Within the circumferential line 0f the boiler; a reinforcing plate 10 secured to the lower portion of the smokethe boiler.
