UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LAWRENCE W. HANCE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGN'GR TO THE BALD WIN LOCOMOTIVE WORKS, O1? PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
LOGOMOTIVE QYLINDER STRUCTURE.
Application filed May 18,
My invention relates to certain improve ments in the cylinder structure of a threecylinder locomotive, in which the mole cyltinder castings are made separate from the central cylinder casting and saddle.
The object of my invention is to so construct a locomotive cylinder structure that the side cylinder castings can be rigidly secured to the frame of the locomotive, as well as to the central cylinder casting.
In the accompanying drawings:
Fig. 1 is an end view of the cylinder structure of a three-cylinder locomotive, showing the frame in section; and
Fig. 2 is a side view of one of the side cylinder castings, showing the flanges which are secured to the central cylinder casting and to the frame of the locomotive.
The main side frames 11 of the locomotive may be of any shape desired, depend ing upon the type of locomotive.
The central cylinder casting 2 rests upon the main side frames 1, as shown in Fig. 1.
The casting 2 contains the third cylinder 5 and its valve-chest 6 in the present instance, and also forms the saddle for the support of the locomotive boiler, which rests upon the addle flange 7 and is secured thereto in the ordinary manner.
The central cylinder casting 2 has flanges 8--8 which fit against the inside surfaces of the frame 1, and has flanges 9 at each side, to which the side cylinder castings are secured.
The side cylinder castings 10-1O contain a cylinder 11 and a valve-chest 12. The cast ing 10 has an integral plate 13 provided with holes through which the bolts extend which attach the side cylinder castings to the cen tral cylinder casting. This plate 13 extends beyond the side cylinder casting, as shown in Fig. 2, forming end flanges 13, which are secured to the flanges 9 by bolts 14.
1928. Serial No. 109,975.
Each plate 13 is offset, as shown in Fig. 1, to flt around that portion of the central 0 linder casting which projects beyond t e ma n frame 1, and has a dependin flange 15 whlch rests against the outer surface of the main frame. This flange 15 is secured to the main frame and to the flange 8 of the central cylinder casting by transverse bolts 16.
1 This method of securing the side cylinder castings to the main frame of the locomotive, as well as to the central cylinder casting, makes a Very substantial structure, as it not only increases the support for the side cylinder castings but also strengthens the connection between thecent-ral cylinder casting and the main frames.
The flange 15 being located some distance 7 from the side cylinder 11, a number of bolts can be located throughout the length of the flange.
I claim: The combination in a threecylinder locomotive, of two side frames of a locomotive structure; a central cylinder casting fornr ing the saddle of the locomotive, said casting LAWRENCE W. HANCE.
