N I TED TATIES LAWRENCE W. HANCE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
CYLINDER SADDLE FOR HIGH-PRESSURE ARTICULA'I'ED LOCOMOTIVES.
Application filed July 7, 1927.
The object of my invention is to improve the construction of the front cylinder saddle of a high pressure articulated locomotive.
The saddle is made in three sections, the central section being bolted to the side sections which contain the cylinders and their valve chests, the central section also acting as a support for the steam and exhaust pipes of the locomotive.
In the accompanying drawings:
Fig. 1 is an end view of my improved cyl inder saddle for the front end of a high pressure articulated locomotive;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the central section;
Fig. 3 is a side View of the central section; and
Fig. 4 is a sectional View on the line 44, Fig. 1.
Each side section contains a cylinder 4, a valve chest 5, and an exhaust passage 6. The side sections have vertical flanges 7 and 8. The centralsection 2 has flanges 9 at each side which are secured to the flanges 7 of the side sections by bolts 10, the parting line being directly over the centre of each side frame 1.
The central section extends between the side frames and has flanges 11 at each side which fit against the inner surfaces of the side frames and are secured together and to the side frames by bolts 12. In this type of locomotive, the central section of the saddle is used only as a support for the overhanging side sections containing the cylinders and their valve chests, and in this instance has a support for the steam and exhaust pipes leading to and from the valve chests and the cylinders.
The central section has two seats 13 and 14 which are cast integral with said central section as clearly shown in Fig. 4, these seats being connected by an inclined reinforcing member 15. The seat 14 is at the forward end of the central section and is higher than the seat 13, the seat 14 supporting the central exhaust pipe at as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1 which has branches bb connected to the exhaust passages 66 in the cylinder saddle structure. This central exhaust pipe has extended base portions 6 which rest upon the seat 14 and are secured thereto by bolts or other fastenings.
Mounted on the seat 13 is the central steam pipe d, which has feet 6 resting upon the seat 13, and bolts secure said pipe structure to the seat 13 of the saddle. The central steam pipe d has branches ee connected by pipes f to Serial No. 204,102;
the steam passages of the steam chests 5. The steamsupply an'dexhaust pipes are shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1.
In order to reinforce the central structure so that it can properly support its load, I provide a horizontal plate 16 which extends from side to side and end to end of the central structure, preferably on a line with the upper surface of the frame 1, and a horizontal plate 17 extends from side to side and end to end of the central structure preferably on a line with the lower ends of the frame 1. The central structure is also reinforced with ribs and fillets to add strength thereto.
I claim:
1. The combination in a locomotive cylinder saddle, of a central section mounted in the main frames of the locomotive; side sections containing cylinders and overhanging said side frames; means for securing the said side sections to the central section and to the side frames; and means on said central section for supporting the steam and exhaust pipes leading to and from the valve chests of the cylinder sections.
2. The combination in a locomotive cylinder saddle for high pressure articulated locomotives, of a central section and side sections, the central section extending between the side frames of the locomotive and having flanges bearing against the inner surfaces of the said side frames, the cylinder sections being located outside of the main frames and having flanges bearing against the outside of the central section; bolts extending through the flanges and securing the sections of the saddleto the frames, the central section and the side sections having vertical flanges extending directly above the main frames; and bolts securing the flanges to the said frames, said central section having seats for the steam supply and exhaust pipes leading re spectively to and from thevalve chests of the cylinder saddle.
3. The combination in a locomotive cylinder saddle for high pressure articulated locomotives, of a central section to which the side sections containing the cylinders are secured, said central section having tWo seats, one seat being higher than the other, the high seat being arranged to support the main exhaust pipe, and the low seat being arranged to support the central steam pipe; and an inclined reinforcing member connecting the two 10 seats.
4. The combination in a locomotive cylin- LAWRENCE W. HANCE.
