The latch construction wnich I have partially illustrated in the accompanying drawings, constitutes no essential feature of the present invention, and it will be clearly understood as this description proceeds that the subjectmattei' of this application is capable of adaptation and use in connection with many differentI` types of door latches now known in the art and which might be employed for many different purposes. In all cases where a quickly attachable and detachable connection between an operating shaft and a part to be actuated thereby may prove to be of material advantage, the invention to be presently described will be found desirable. However, since the invention has been used in connection with automobile door latches and found particularly serviceable and satisfactory, I have selected this application of the invention for illustrative purposes, and in the accompanying drawings have shown a portion of an automobile door 5. The inner `face of this door is mortised in the usual manner to receive the latch casing 6 within which the latch bolt and the projecting andretracting mechanism therefor are mounted. The latch bolt retracting means includes the customary rollback 7 which is journalled for oscillating or rocking movement at its ends in spaced parts of the latch case 6. This rollback may be of any desired form requisite to insure its proper cooperation with a part of the latch bolt whereby the bolt is reti'L cted when said rollback is oscillated in one direction. In every case however, the rollback 7 is provided with a bore 8 coincident with its axis of oscillation, said bore being of any desired polygonal shape in cross section. Preferably, the opposite ends of the rollback 7 are tiush with the outer surfaces of the inner and outer walls respectively, of the case 6.

In the inodilieation shown in Figs. l2 and 13, the entfanee ends of the key-receiving; grooves shown at 17c extend in substantially parallel relation to each other and the remaining' portions of the grooves have their hase walls curved to the opposite side face of the shaft end at 17d.
