IMPROVEMENT IN NECK-TIES.

Sp;cification forming part of Letters Patent No. 165,577, dated Ju y 13, 1875; application filed Jure 23, 1875.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ADOLPH HELLENBERG, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Neckties, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, in 'which Figure 1 represents an inside view of my neck-tie when the parts are unfolded so as to show their connection with the shield. Fig. 2 is a similar view when the cross-piece alone is unfolded. Fig. 3 is a similar view when the neck-tie is ready for use. Fig. etis a transverse section of the same.

This invention consists in combining a reversible and detachable cross'piece with the bow of a neck-tie in such a manner that when one part of the cross-piece has become soiled or worn the cross-piece can be reversed or removed and replaced by another, and the neck-tie can be kept in good condition for a long time. The cross-piece is provided with two elastic loops, one at each end, which can be made to connect with a button secured to the neck-tie shield, so that the operation of de taching or reversing the cross-piece can be effected with facility. The bow is connected to the shield at one edge by a narrow band or close stitches, so that the same can be reversed on the same side of the shield.

In the drawing, the letter A designates the shield of my neck-tie, which is made of pasteboard or any other suitable material in the usual form. This shield supports the bow B and the cross piece G, the bow being secured to one edge of said shield by a narrow band, a, or by one or more strands of strong thread, so that before the cross-piece is put on the how can be turned round on the shield, and that either side of the same can be made to face outward. In the example shown by the drawing, the cross-piece O is provided with two elastic loops, b c, and on the inner surface of the shield is secured a button, cl, so that, when the loops 1) c are made to engage with said button, the cross-piece is retained securely in position, and that by releasing said loops the cross-piece can be readily detached from the shield and turned upside down or reversed, as may be desired. If the crosspiece has become worn at one edge, therefore, it can be readily reversed, and if it has become soiled on one side, it can be turned over, so that it will present a good appearance for a long time. And, in the same manner, the bow, when it has become soiled on one side, can be reversed, and thereby a neck-tie is obtained which can be worn for a long time. It must be remarked, that anysuitable devices may be used for securing the cross-piece to the shield, but I prefer to use the elastic loops above described, since by their aid the crosspiece can be readily connected and disconnected. My invention is applicable to neck-ties of any description in which a bow and a crosspiece are combined. e

The use of aseparate shield may be avoided, as the strengthening of the bow or holding of the same in place may be effected by strengthening the inside or back of the bow by any suitable material.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. The combination of a detachable and re- -versible cross-piece with the bow of a necktie, substantially as shown and described.

2. The loops]; 0 and button 61 in combination with the shield A and cross-piece G of a necktie, substantially as set forth.

3. In combination with the neck-tie shield A and cross-piece (J, a bow, B, fastened at one edge to the shield by a narrow band or equivalent fastening, and arranged so that said bow may be turned and reversed on 18 831118 side of the shield, substantially as and for the purpose described.
