or to impart movement to other bodies; a
further object being to provide a hinge oi"v the ;class andfor the purposespecified adapt ed for use in connection with foldable leaves or a table whereby the leaves may be folded together and extended or moved into operative and inoperative positions, and the ac tion of the hinge operating a lever coupled with one of the butts of the hinge; a further object of my invention isto utilize the leverage power of the working and movable parts of a hingeto actuate a device,mechani sm or apparatus of any kind; and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in a device of the class and for the purpose specified which is simple in construction and operation, eificient in use, and which is constructed as hereinafter described claimed. V
The invention is fully. disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in,which. v
Fig.' 1is a sectional view throughthe sep arate partsof a table leaf showing one form;

ii the drawing I have show-n forthepurpose of illustrating one method of carrying my invention into effect, a table leaf 10 .composed of separate parts 10 and 10. Mounted in connection with. the lower faces and and the abutting edges of the parts 10 and 10 are the separate butts 11 and 120i a hinge made according to my invention, the hinges being set in mortises formed in the parts I ltlfand 1Q andsecured in position in any ,dGSlIQCl manner.
struction shown, are formed of sheet metal i and are of channel formation in cross \section, said butts having attachlng flanges 13 at their ELClJELCQIlt faces when the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing. Pivotally mounted within the channel of the butt 11 as seen at 141 is a hinge link 15, the free end of which is provided I with a pin 16 o'peratedin elongated slot-s or grooves 17 formed in the opposite side faces of butt 12, while .a similar link 18 is pivoted to the butt 12 as seen at 19 provided at its freerend with a pin 20 operating in elongat ed slots or grooves 21 in the butt 11, the
The hinge butt 12 is notprovided with the lever 23 ;nor link :25 in the construction shown in Fig. 2, but if desired, it will be understood "that a lever and link may be coupled with the bearing portion 12 and used for any desired" purpose, itbeing further understood that a single lever and link construction may be mounted in connection with either one of the butts 1112.
As above stated, the use or my invention which is herein indicated is for supporting and operating the extension leaves of a table, and in Fig. 4 of the drawing I have indicated a plan view of the adjacent ends of the parts and 10 of the table leat' 10 and the butts of two hinges mounted at the side portions of said table leai both hinges being 01 the same construction, and the butts 11 of each hinge are provided with levers 23 having rollers 26 engaging two channels 2?. T he structure of the channels 27 is such that whenthe table leaf is extended for use, as seen in Fig. 1 of the drawing, and moved from the position shown in Fig. 2 into such operative position, the leaf is slightly raised and passes from the raised portion 27 of the channels 27 and then drops into a slight depression 27" to fixedly support and retain the leaf in proper position, it being understood that the end portions or the leaf parts 10 and 10 are supported on the extension rails 10 of the table construction, said rails being indicated in Fig. 1 of the drawing. In moving the leaf 10, or the separate parts 10 and 10 to inoperative or folded position as seen in Fig. 2 of the drawing, the part 10 is raised and moved upwardly over and onto the part 10 in which operation the action of the hinge links and 1S,
thelink and the lever 23 will cause the lever 23 to be moved through the channel 27 to guide the parts 10 and 10 downwardly beneath the top of the table proper and between the extension rails 10. The completion of this operation is indicated in Fig. 2 of the drawing, and it will be noted that the lever '23 has been moved into position substantially at right angles to the longitudinal plane of the butt 11, when the separate butts i are in their extended position.
In Figs. 5 and 6 of the drawing, I have shown a slight modification wherein the bearing portions 28 are arranged adjacent and at right angles to the end portions of the butts 11 and 12 instead of centrally thereof as seen in Fig. 1, and these bearing portions have grooves or apertures 29 which open into the grooves or apertures 17 and 21 and instead or" employing the links 25, the levers30 are mounted directly upon the pins 16 and 20 operating in the apertures 17 and 21 respectively, whereby the action of the links 15 and 18 of the hinge is imparteddirectly to the levers 30, and said levers have, at the adjacent pivoted end thereof, pins 31 which operate in the apertures or grooves 29whereby in the opening and closing of the hinge, the pins 31 travel toward and from the apertures 17 and 21, and the tree ends of the levers 30 which are preterably provided with anti-fr ctional rollers 32 or mechanism to accomplish a predetermined 1 result. The distinctive feature of my present invention residing in utilizing the leverage power of the working and movable parts of a hinge to actuate a device, mechanism and apparatus of any kind, and while I have illustrated one method of carrying my invention into effect and have shown one form of hinge construction, it will be ap parent that I am not necessarily limited in these respects, nor am I limited to the other details oi construction herein shown and described, and various changes therein and inialifications thereof may be made, Within the scope or the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrii'icing its advantages. I
