My invention relates to a reloading clip for revolvers and my object is to provide a simple and inexpensive device of this char a'cte'r whereby all of the chambers in the cylinder of a revolver can be quickly and simultaneously loaded with cartridges.
lnorder that the invention may be fully understood, reference will now be had to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 shows the device in the act of refoading the cylinder of a revolver.
2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the loaded device on line 22 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the devlcc with the cartridges removed.
Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of a shell forming a part of the device.
Fig. 5 is a detail perspective of a plunger.
Fig. 6 is a detail perspective of two resilient cartridge holders.
In carrying out the invention I employ a circular shell 2 having an open forward end 3 and a closed rear end 4. The shell 2 has longitudinal slots 6 having flaring forward portions 8 for a purpose which will hereinafter appear.
10 designates a plurality of cartridge holders which are arranged in a circular row within the shell 2, as shown by Fig. 3. The cartridge holders 10 consist of a plurality of members 14, each of which comprises a back 16 and a pair of parallel resilient arms 18, which latter are preferably coextensive with the former as shown more clearly by Fig. 6. Each back 16 is riveted or otherwise secured to the inner circular portion of the shell 2 while the arms 18 are concaved to conform more or less to the cross sectional curvature of the cartridges A, which they are adapted to hold. The forward portions of the arms 18 of each member 14 are slit rearwardly from the back 16 a suitable distance as; indicated at 20, Fig. 6, and are bent or crimped in opposite directions in order to grip the forward portions of the cartridges A and prevent them from slipping out of the shell 2.
22 designates a plunger for expelling the cartridges from between the members 14 and the shell 2. Said plunger 22 in its preferred form comprises a cylindrical stem 24, a handle 26 at the rear end and a plurality of radially extending fingers 28 at the forward end of said stem 24. The stem 24 extends through a central opening 30 in the rear end 4 of the shell "2 and the fingers 28 are spaced apart 'to project into the passageways 32 formed between the inner margins '34 of the arms 18, Fig. 3.
In practice the device is loaded with cartridges A by slipping a cartridge 36 formed between the inner circular surface of the shell 2 and an arm 18 of each of two 'adja cent members '14. The-cartridges are forced backwardly into the device and against the radial fingers 28 of the plunger 22 which has been previously drawn backward'ly to bring said fingers 28 against the inner surface of the closed end 4 of the shell 2, as shown by full lines, Fig. 2. If the cartridges have rims as indicated by Bsaid rims will be grasped by the rear portions of the spring arms 18 and the inner circular portion of the shell 2, while the crimped forward ends of said arms 18 will grip the forward portions of the cartridges and thus reliably hold the latter within the shell 2 until expelled by the plunger 22. i
In Fig. 1 of the drawing I have shown a revolver C equipped with the customary six 3 chambered cylinder D. In order to load the cylinder D the forward portions of the cartridges are slipped into the cylinder chambers by the user grasping the shell 2 and moving the same forwardly until its front edge abuts the rear end of the cylinder D. The plunger 22 is then pushed forwardly to simultaneously deliver the cartridges from the shell 2 into the cylinder chambers.
The shell 2 is of slightly less diameter than the cylinder D so that it may be placed against the rear end of the latter without contracting the customary projections formed onthe frame of the revolver at the rear of the opening E. By making the shell 2 of less diameter than the cylinder D it is necessary to place the cartridges A within said shell in such manner that said cartridges will diverge slightly towards their forward ends in order to readily enter the rear ends of the cylinder chambers. Vhile the divergence is so slight that it has not been in dicated on the drawing, it would be sufficient to cause the intermediate and rear portions of the cartridges to bind against the rear margins of the chambers as said cartridges are forced into the latter, were it not for the slots 6 which allow the rims B to move outwardly in a radial manner and thereby permit the cartridges to assume a parallel position and become axially alined With the chambers as they are delivered 7 into the latter.- a
