m'raess e6 STATES IMPROVEMENT IN FENCE-POSTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [65,557, dated July 13,1875; application filed June 23, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EVERARD GEER, of the city of Beloit, Rock county, in the State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Posts; and I V hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawings are sufficient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly appertains to make and use my said invention or improvements witl1- out further invention or experiment.
The nature of my invention and improvements consists in the construction of a combi' nation fence-post, or a fence-post in two parts, of wood, provided with a metal foot or lower end for driving into the ground; reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, an d forming part of this specification, and in which said drawing Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved fencepost complete. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the foot or metal part of the post; and Fig. 3 is a vertical section by producing the vertical line dividing the wood part of the post at B B, throughvA d, to the bottom end of the metal part of the post.

Letter A represents the metal part of the post. d (1 are fish-backs for strengthening the metal part laterally, so that the metal part may be made light, and yet be sufficiently strong. B B are twin posts of wood, having their lower ends fitted into the recess 6 of the metal part A, as shown, and the posts B B are secured to the vertical flange A by bolts 0 c.
The recess 0 is now made by coring in the casting; but that may be dispensed with by cutting out the end walls of the recessed chamber e, and extending the outer wall parallel to the flange A to an equal height therewith, employingsimilar bolts for holding the posts B B to the metal part, and the double flange would more firmly hold the posts in the metal socket formed in that way.
This metal foot of the post may be driven into the ground wherever the soil is sut'ticiently free from stone or gravel, thereby saving much time and expense over the usual old way of setting posts; and another great advantage is, that they may be easily drawn out of the ground when desirable to remove or change the location of the fence Another valuable feature of my invention is, that each metal foot of this fence-post is provided with two wooden posts, to the outer of each of which posts so to speak) the board rails of each particular panel of fence are nailed separately, so that each and every one of the panels of the entire fence is complete in itself, and interchangeable with any other panel by removing the bolts 0 c, and which may not be necessary when the suggested change in casting the socket 6 shall have been made, and any panel of the fence may in this way be used as bars or a gateway; and yet another valuable feature in my invention is, that any inferior, cheap timber may be used for posts, as they are not required to'enter the earth, and hence will not soon decay, though of inferior material in that respect, and may also be replaced by others at small cost and inconvenience-the metal base being practically indestructible.
Having thus fully described the construction and manner of using my improved fencepost, what 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- In a fence-post, the combination and arrangement of the twin-posts B B with the metal part A, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
