SAFETY LIGHT.
Application filed October 15, 1926. Serial No. 141,853.
The object of this invention is to produce an article adapted to be readily, carried in the pocket of the user, and by means of which a light may be provided for lighting a cigar, cigarette, or some formsof illuminating devices, the article being especially a slid-able device is manually operated, this device serving also to open, the cover for the side of the casing,thestri1t being provided with heads or percussion devices adapted to ignite upon engaging a prepared surface.
A further object is to provide a strip carrying portions to be ignited. by frictional contact, the edges of the strip being slotted, and adapted for engagement b v*a particular form of feedin device carried 1) a slid I able element adapted to control a cover for an opening in the casing of the article, thru which the end of the strip is fed, in con" motion with the operation resulting in ignition, for thepurpose indicated.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of elements described, illustrated and claimed, it being understood that modifications ma be made within the scope of the claims without dcpartin'g from the spirit of the invention.

the device is illustrated in the drawings, this chamber being approximately cricular but including a throat portion 18, the walls of which mergeinto the walls 20 of the feed cha-nnehthru which the strip to-be fed and ignited, passes.

without the necessity of employing other securing devices.

The paper strip 30 :is coiled within chamber 16 and is provided with heads or enlargements 31, corresponding substantially with match heads, andthe slots 32 are so positioned that the feeding device referred to below engages these slots after feeding a predetermined length of the strip including one head 31.
The feeding device of Figure 6 and else where includes an arm 33 having an end. 33 for pivotal connection with the cover 22, i
and this arm includes a portion 34 bearing on the surface of thecasing, and a portion 35 extending; through a slot in the casing. shown in Figure 2, this portion carrying a U-element including fingers 36 movable be tween the walls 20 of the channel portion, and tongues 87 for engagement with the slotted portions 32 of the strip, so that the latter may be fed to the position required for igniting one of the heads 31. I
The strip feeding device is operated by pressure applied at 34, by the thumb or finger of the user, who first releases iatch 38 rigid with cover 22 and having a notched end 88 engaging offset or shoulder 3d of member 3a. The thumb nail is applied to the deflected edge 38 for the releasing operation.
Assuming that this match releasing operation has taken place, pressure at 34; opens cover 22 and feeds the strip, causing the ignition of one of the match heads 31, which engages prepared surface 41-2 carried by extension 41 of clip Spring 44 prevents accidental movement of the strip after feed ing. The match head being ignited and the light employed for the purpose desired, the
cover 22 is closed and the used portion of strip 30 is sever-ed by the device 24. The closing of the cover causes the notched end 38 to automatically engage atthe point 8%,-
thereby retaining the cover.
The used strip may be discarded or deposited in the chamber Within the upper portion of the casing, which may also be employed at times for receiving ashes. hen a new strip 30 is inserted in the casring, the ignition device of Figure 7 may one of which forms a magazine, walls defining a channel extending from the chamber last named toward the outer portion of the casing, means for feedin a strip carrying elements to be ignited through the channel, means for frictionally engaging the elements on the strip thus fed, and a pivoted cover mounted on the casing and controlled by the direct mechanical thrust of the feeding means, said cover being adapted to close the outer end of the channel.
2. In a device of the class described, a casing including a chamber for receiving a strip carrying elements to be ignited, the casing having a channel opening tl'irough the edge of .aid casing and having communication with the chamber, a pivoted cover for closing the outer portion of the channel, an operating arm connected with the cover, and opening said cover by direct mechanical thrust and a strip feeding device carried by said arm.
In a device of the class described, a casing having a chamber therein and having a channel extending from said chamber to the outer portion of the casing, a pivoted cover for closing the outer portion of the channel, an operating arm for imparting direct opening thrust to the cover, a strip feeding device carried by the arm, means for igniting an element to be carried by a strip fed from the chamber, and means for retaining the operating arm in position for holding the cover closed.
41-. In a device of the class described, a casing, means therein defining a chamber for a paper strip carrying match heads, and defining a channel extending from said chamber to the outer portion of the casing, a'cover for closing the outer end of the channel, an operating device connected with the cover, a strip feeding device connected with the operating device, and a strip severing device carried by said cover.
