SCOURING ROLL.

My invention relates to scouring machines, and more especially to that type of scouring roll designed for use in the breasts of wood heels. lt has for its purposes, to provide an improved abrasive surfaced shell, designed for convenient lreplacement and easily'interchangeable end for end, so that the wear thereon may be uniform; to provide a positive anchorage eliminating slipping and turning of the abra ive surfaced shell; to materially reduce upkeep cost, to eliminate loose ends; to provide an improved and more satisfying scouring surface; and to provide the various other advantages and results made evident from the following specification.

I accomplish the objects of my invention as shown in the accompanying drawings. which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure l shows an end view of the abrasive surfaced shell, preferably shaped from emery cloth or other suitable material. Figure 2 shows the inner binder so called, adaptable to joinend holdthe ends of the abrasive surfaced shell shown in Figure l. Figure 3 shows the foundation roll, preferably of rubber or other suitably pliable material, about and upon which the abrasive surfaced shell is carried when in use. Figure t shows the detail of the anchorage well, preferable of metal or other suitable material, made integral with the foundation roll, into which anchorage well the inner binder shown in Figure 2 fits and is, in use, securely anchored. Figure 5 shows a perspective view of my complete device assembled on a shaft and adaptable foruse.

Referring again to Figure l, A shows the abrasive surfaced shell. B shows the ends of the shell A, which are joined and held within the inner binder C shown in Figure 2. D shows the holding points formed on the binder C, the ends of which holding points D are shaped to fit into the holes E opposite each binder point. Referring again to Figure 3, F shows the foundation roll, into which the anchorage well G (shown in Figure 4) is formed as an integral part, H shows the holding arms or flanges on the well G designed to preserve integrity and to furnish a finished edge at I. .l shows the aperture in roll F through which passes the shaft K shown in Figurei.

' Those familar with the art to which my invention appertains will readily recognize its many advantages over the type of scouring rolls heretofore commonly used. rlhe interchangeable enl to end feature reduces replacement costs one half, and eliminates all loose ends. The anchorage feature solves a long` standing problem and eliminates all by slip of the abrasive shell.

l do not desire to confine myself to the specific details of construction herein set forth and described but claim all such qnivalents and variations as may well be construed to fall within the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention I claim new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States of America:

l. ri scouring device comprising a supportig roll formed with a slot therein, an abraL ve shell disposed about said roll with meeting ends turned in and lying together in said slot, a clasp device about said inturned ends of the shell and having prongs extending throuo'h the ends to hold them together, and a member disposed in the slot to receive the shell ends and the clasp device thereon, and having flanged edges, the flanges extending into the material of the roll to form smooth edges at the mouth of the slot therein and to retain said member in the slot.

2. A. scouring device comprising a cylindrical supporting roll formed with a slot therein extending from end to end thereof, an abrasive shell disposed about said 'roll with its meeting ends turned in and lying together in said slot, a U-shaped clasp device about said inturned ends of the shell and having prongs extending through the maten rial of the ends to hold them together, and a U-shaped member disposed in the slot to receive the shell ends and the clasp device thereon, and having -flanged edges, the flanges extending into the material of the roll to form smooth edges at the mouth of the slot therein and to retain said member in the slot.
