Description
FY. WERTZ.
Auger-Handle.
N0.165,522, Patentedluly13,1875.
WITNESSES PATENT FRANK WERTZ, OF MAHANOY CITY, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN AUGER-HANDLES- Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 165,522, dated July 13, 1875 application filed June 1, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK WERTZ, of Mahanoy City, county of Schuylkill and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Auger-Handles, of which the following is a specification The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of an angerhandle in which the bit can be easily and quickly attached and detached, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which. my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describeits construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing which forms a part of this specification, and in which' Figure 1 is a side View of my auger-handle. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same, and Fig. 3 shows the various parts thereof detached.
My auger-handle is formed of two handles, A B, of wood or other suitable material, and a center connecting-sleeve, c. of metal. The end of the handle A is inserted in the sleeve 0 and permanently secured therein by one or more screws or other convenient means. In the other end of the sleeve 0 is a longitudinal slot, to, from the inner end of which a slot, b, runs diagonally or slightly inclined inward for a suitable distance. The end of the handle B being inserted in this end of the sleeve a screw or pin, 1', is passed through said slot into the handle. From the inner end of the handle B projects a pin, cl, of suitable length, which pin is firmly secured in said handle, and the handle strengthened by a metal ferrule or otherwise, as desired. Through the center of the sleeve 0 are made square holes for the insertion of will enter the slot 1), and by the inclination of said slot the handle B will be drawn inward so as to clamp the bit-shank between the inner ends of the two handles. The bit is thus held by the sleeve, by the pin d, and by the two handles, so as to be perfectly firm and immovable when in use. The bit can readily be removed when required for exchange or other purposes.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination of the handle A having the slot-ted sleeve 0, the handle B having the pin (1 and screw 1', and the bit-shank D, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. In the auger-handle A B O, constructed as described, the longitudinal slot (0, and illclined slot 1), formed in the sleeve (3, and the screw or pin '5 passed through the same into the movable handle B, as andfor the pun poses herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I hereuntoaffix my signature this 25th day of May, A. D. 1875.
FRANK WERTZ.
