UNITED STATES PATENT orrics.
ALBIN F. BRAFF AND FRITZ OTTOSON, OF SUPERIOR, XVISCON SIN.
'DOOR CHECK AND HOLDER.
Application led May 21,
Our invention relates to devices designed for buffers, checks and holders for screen, and other doors, such as those illustrated and described in United States Letters Patent No. 845,344, and more particularly to such as described in our recent application for United Stat xs Letters Patent No. 7 111,794 filed May 21, 1924i.
As we have been exclusively7 identified with the manufacture and sale of devices of this character for a number of years, we have discovered it is advisable to assure perfect alignment of the parts which results .in less noise from operation and facilitates the easy tripping of the catch lever. To this end we have produced the device described and claimed in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which,
Fig. 1 shows a side elevation view of our improved device secured to a door casing and holding the door in closed position;
Fig. 2 shows a. side elevation view of our device in open position;
Fig. 3 shows a plan view of our device;
Fig. 4 shows a longitudinal sectional view of our device; and
Figs. 5 and 6 show detail views of our improved bracket. Y
In so far as the main operating parts of our device are concerned, it is sucient to state it is constructed with the parts substantially the same as disclosed and illustrated in our former, and now pending, application No. 714,794 and consists of a bracket 10 with parallel side walls, 11 and 12, secured to a door casing 13, adjacent the swinging end of a door 14, the bracket supporting a pivotally mounted and moving pair of parallel spaced arms, 15 and 16, preferablyv crescentshaped in conformation, and joined at their ends, in spaced relation, by the rivet pins 17 and 18, on which are secured rollers 19 and 20 respectively. A coil spring 21 is secured to a cross bar 22 which extends at right angles between the said arms, its other end being secured to the bracket. The arrange mentand construction of the parts are such that when the door is closed the outer roller is held tightly against it and keeps it in this closedv position, the tension of the spring functioning for this purpose. When the 1924. Serial No. 714,793.
door is forced open, it forces outwardly the outer roller until the cross bar 22 has crossed its dead center (with relation to the mounting and pull of the spring) and obviously the arms and roller remain in this set position until tripped. At this time the inner roller (moving oppositely to the outer roller) has been positioned in the path of the door andas the door closes it engages the inner roller and forces it outwardly, thus tripping the arm levers and bringing the cross bar 22 inwardly and passing its dead center thus permitting the spring to force the outer roller against the door and hold it closed.
The construction thus described does not particularly differ from the prior art and does not constitute a part of our invention, except in so far as it forms a basis for our improvement. Our improvement consists of the lug 23 which is secured to the bracket 10 and so positioned that it engages the coil spring 2l in approximately its central portion, when the catch is at its open position. rlhe placement of this lug is designed to permit the cross bar 22 to pass its dead center in its outer movement and by the tension which it exerts on the spring to return it slightly lafter the door, in its opening, has released the outer roller, but it does not return it far enough to permit this roller to be in the path of the closing door. The action produced on the spring by this lug tends to keep the spring in perfect alignment, as well as constituting a support therefor. It also reduces the noise caused by the opening of the door as it retards the snapping of the spring after the cross bar has passed its dead center. In addition to these features it functions'to cause the catch to trip easier as the door is closing.
Having thus described our invention what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
1. In a door catch of the class described a bracket att-ached to the door casing; a catch lever pivotally secured to the bracket; a spring to actuate the movement of the catch lever; a lug on the bracket to engage the spring when the catch lever is in its Outer position.
2. In a door catch of the class described a bracket attached to the door casing; a catch lever pvotlly secured to the bracket and so constructed that one end of the lever engages the door when closed and When the 5 door is opened the other end of the lever is moved. into the path of the door` to be contasted thereby as the door is closed; a spring to actuate the movement of the catch lever and to exert a tension thereon; a lug to engage the spring when the catch lever s n its "l open position.
