IMPROVEMENT IN BOOK-SUPPORTS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 165,500, dated July 13, 1875; application filed July 13,1874.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, WILLIAM PATTON, of Vevay, in the county of Switzerland and State of Indiana, have invented certain Improvements in Devices for Supporting Blan k-Books, of which the following is a specification:

In using very large blank-books, those having very wide pages, and those where it is necessary to carry the written line across both pages, it is necessary to rise from the chair to reach the extremity of the line, or slide the book around on the table as each line is written.

The object of this invention is to enable the writer to manipulate the book by a light touch, so as to bring any portion of the page within easy reach of his pen without rising from his chair, thus avoiding the irksome and laborious operations above described.

This invention is in the nature of a turntable, supporting the book, and resting upon the table or desk in any desired location.

In the drawings, Figure l is a plan and general view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical mid-section of the same.

Let A A represent the open pages of a large blank-book in which the written line is to be carried across both pages. This book rests upon a bed, B, and the rounded back lies in a hollowed troughor groove, 0, in the said bed. To the under side of the bed B is attached, by means of screws or otherwise, a circular plate,D, which may be simply a rim with abar, a, diametrically across the center. This plate rests upon another, E, precisely like the first in form and size, and this latter rests upon the table or desk F. In the bar a, at the center of the plate E, is rigidly affixed a vertical stud or pivot, Gr, which engages with a hole in the bar a at the center of the plate D. The top of the stud being rounded, and its length adjusted so that the circular plate or rim D barely touches the lower, a delicate pivot is formed, upon which the circular plate or rim D and its attached bed B may be made to rotate very readily in either direction, the lower plate E remainin g stationary.

The manner of using the device is as follows: The device is placed in the proper position on the table F, and the book opened and placed thereon, the back resting in the groove G, as shown in Fig. 1. When, in carrying out the line, the distance becomes too great to reach conveniently, the book and upper revolving portion of the deviceis turned more or less, as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 1, thus bringing every portion of the pages successively within reach of the pen Being delicately adjusted on its pivot, the bed carrying the heaviest book may be rotated with a touch. The groove 0 permits the book to lie nearly or quite level, and allows it to be moved to and from the writer without danger of interfering with its lateral adjustment. The plates D and E should be circular, but the bed B may be any desired shape. 7

I claim- A blank-book holder composed of a bed,B, having agroove or depression, 0, across its center, and a circular plate or rim, D, attached to its under side, in combination with a supporting-plate, E, provided with a central pivot, G, on which the said bed turns, substantially as herein specified.
