1 Application filed' august 30,1926, Serial N0. 132,519. Renewed- June--30, 1e27.--
The invention aims to provide a new and improved scraper for the purpose of removing carbon from piston ring grooves, the device being of such nature that it is 5 simple and inexpensive, yet is efiicient and very desirable for use upon pistons of numerous sizes.
-With the foregoing in view, the invention resides in the novel subject matter herein- 1 after described. and claimed, the description being supplemented by the accompanying drawing. v
Fig. 1 is an elevation of the tool and a sectional view through a piston showing the manner of using the device in cleaning the carbon from a ring groove of said piston.
Fig. 2 is an edge view of the tool.
Fig. 3 is a. transverse sectional view on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4. is a disassembled perspective view of certain elements of the device, to be hereinafter described.
In the form of construction selected for illustration in the present application, the numerals 5 and 6 designate two flat metal bars disposed in crossed relation and pivoted together at 7 the portions of the bars in ad vance of the pivot being shaped to straddle a piston P, said portion of one of the bars being then receivable in any of the ring grooves G of said piston, while carbon scraping means carried by said portion of the other bar, is then also engageable with the groove. Thus, by grasping the rear or handle portions of the bars 5 and 6 and turning the device about the piston or turning the latter within the device, all carbon may be quickly and easily removed from the ring groove, and after cleaning one groove, the other grooves may be successively cleaned in the same manner.
The numeral 8 designates a V-shaped scraper whose ends are. suitably sharpened at 9 to engage the bottoms and sides of the ring grooves. This scraper lies upon one fiat side of the bar 5, at the front end of the latter and the two ends of said scraper project inwardly from the inner edge of said bar 5. A metal plate 10 contacts with the side of the scraper 8, remote from the side which contacts with the bar 5, said plate and bar being formed with registering openings 11 and 12. A screw 13 or some analogous fastener passes through these openings and is received in the crotch of the scraper 8. At one end, the plate 10 has corner portions 14 bent laterally to engage.
Thus, turning of the plate 10 with respect to the bar 5 is prevented and any turning of the scraper with respect to said plate is prevented, and as the flanges 14 hold the scraper 8 against movement in one direction,
. and the screw 13 holds it against movement in the other direction, it will be seen that the scraper is rigidly yet detachably secured. to the bar 5.
With each tool, a set of scrapers of differ ent thicknesses, may be furnished. Thus, a scraper of the necessary thickness for any width of ring groove, may be applied to the bar 5, and quick and easy interchange from a scraperof one thickness to one of another, maybe effected.
Excellent results have been obtained from the details disclosed and they are therefore preferably followed. However, within the scope of the invention as claimed, variations may be made.
I'claim:
1. In a carbon scraper for piston ring grooves, a scraper-carrying member, a V- shap'ed scraper lying against said carrying member and having its ends projecting therefrom, a plate lying against the side of said scraper remote from the carrying member, a fastener passing through said plate and said carrying member and disposed in the crotch of'said scraper, and means on said plate abutting the outer edge of said scraper to I hold it against sliding with respect to said plate. i
2. In a carbon scraper for piston ring grooves, a scraper-carrying member, a V- shaped scraper lying against said carrying member and having its ends projecting therefrom, a plate lying against the side of said scraper remote from thecarrying member, a fastener passing through said plate and said carrying member and disposed in the crotch of said scraper, means on said plate abutting the outeredge of said scraper to prevent sliding of the latter with respect to the plate, and
means on said plate abutting an edge of said carrying member to "prevent turning of the plate about said fastener. a
3. A structure as specified in claim 2;
5 said edge-abutting means consisting of flanges bent laterally from said plate.
4. A structure as specified in claim 2; said edge-abutting means consisting of flanges affixed my signature.
'ber having its ends in contact with the inner edge of the scraper to prevent turning of the latter about said fastener.
V, In testimony whereof I have hereunto HOMER S; ALBERT.
