'This invention relates to new and useful improvements in gates, doors, and similar closures and has for its primary object to provide a device of this character adapted to be operated by a vehicle approachingr the gate to cause the automatic opening thereof, the mechanism being so constructed that when the vehicle has passed through the gate the same will automatically return to closed position. v
An important object of the invention is to substantially improve and Vsimplify over gates of this 'general character heretofore patented.
With the foregoing and other objects in view as the nature of the invention will be better understood, the same comprises the novel form, combination and arangement of parts hereinafter more fully described shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed.
In the drawing wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts in both of the views:
Figure 1 is a transverse section of a roadway equipped with a gate constructed in accordance with the present invention, the mechanism being disclosed in full line closed position and in dotted line partially open position, and
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section through the road equipped with the improved gate.
Now having particular reference to the drawing 5 indicates the road surface, transversely beneath which the earth is formed with a narrow pit 6. The road surface is removed from above the pit and at a prede- I termined area at opposite sides thereof and disposed within the opening in the road for closing the top of the pit is a bridge panel 7. The opposite ends of thisV panel 7 are supported by concrete walls 8-*8 arranged perpendicularly within the opposite ends of the pit 6 as clearly disclosed in Fig. 1.
Arranged upon opposite ends of the bridge plate 7 are spaced vertical bracketsk 9--9 between the upper ends of each pair of which are pivotally arranged the lower ends of gate actuating levers 10-10, these levers extend inwardly and upwardly as indicated in Figure 1 and have arranged therebetween a gate unit A, which unit is pivoted to the ends of the levers 10-10 asv at 11. Pivotally secured to these levers 1010 of each gate unit-are the upper ends of downwardly extending link bars 12-12 that are movable in each instance through :an opening at the adjacent end of the bridge plate 7. To the lower' ends of these bars are pivotally se- -cured elongated bars 14-14 that extend inwardly and upwardly within the pit 6, the bars of the opposite gate units crossing at the center of the bridge plate 7-and being pivoted as at 15 to depending hangers 16-16 bolted upon the underside of the bridge plate 7 at the direct center thereof.
The extreme inner ends of all the bars 141i have pivotal connection with upwardly extending links 17 that are freely movableA through openings 18 in the bridge plate 7, while the upper ends of those links at opposite sides of the longitudinal center of the bridge plate 7 are pivoted to the adjacent edge of a vehicle operated platform 19. As disclosed in bot-h of the figures, these ends of the platforms are elevated, while the opposite ends thereof rest upon 'the surface of the road 5. proaches the gate mechanism from either side, that particularplatform 19 is forced downwardly by the weight of the vehicle for so moving the links 17, bars 14, and 12 as well as the gate attached levers 10 to 'swing the same upwardly in the direction of the arrows Iin Figure l and as suggested by the partially open position of the gates indicated by the dotted lines in the same ligure. After Vthe vehicle passes over the platform at'the kopposite side of thegate structure the weightof the` gates` will cause the same to drop downwardlyV into closed position for preventing the passage of animals therethrough.
In a view of the foregoing description when considered in `conjunction with the accompanying` drawing it will be apparent that I have provided a highly novel, simple, and eiiciently operating vgate structure that is well adapted for all purposes heretofore designated, even though I have herein shown and described the invention as consisting of certain detail structural elements it is nevertheless to be understood that some changes may be made thereinwithout affecting the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is: i
