1928 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 llllltwm llluu Edward Widle Patented Aug. 18, 1931 unites ATEli l FFIQE EDWARD WEIDLEIN, F AUGUSTA, KANSAS AUTOMATIC GATE This invention relates to an automatic gate particularly adapted for use in connection with motor vehicle traiiic but which, with slight changes in the approach thereto, may
1 be adapted for use in connection with other types of trafiic.
The primary object of the invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a gate of the above mentioned class which is adapted to be opened by the approach of a vehicle and which is further adapted to close upon the passage of the vehicle therethrough.
A further object of the invention is to pro vide a gate operable as aforesaid, which is fulcrumed on an upright support and the parts of which fold together when the gate is swungto open position.
With the foregoing and other objects in View, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more particularly de scribed, and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein is shown a preferred embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that such drawings and description are to be taken as illustrative and that the invention is intended to be limited only by the scope of the claim hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawings in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same Figure 1 is an elevation of an automatic gate constructed in accordance with this invention, showing the same in closed position.
Figure 2 is a top plan thereof.
Figure 3 is an elevation thereof, shown in open position in full lines and shown in partially open position in dotted lines.
Referring to the drawings in detail. the numeral 1 designates a roadway upon one side of which is disposed a pair of closely arranged, spaced, upright supporting posts 2 and upon the opposite side of which is dis '45" posed an upright guide post 3. The guide post 3 is formed in its inner face with a vertical groove 1 which is open at its upper end and which opposes the space between the supporting posts 2.
5o Adapted to span the roadway between the supporting posts 2 and guide post 3 is a gate indicated generally by the numeral 5 and consisting of a pair of horizontal members 6 and 7, a pair of vertical members 8 pivotally connecting the members 6 and 7 and a cross member '9 pivotally connecting the v rtical members 8 and extending in parallel relation to the horizontal members 6 and 7. The horizontal member 6 is of'materially greater length than the member 7 and one end thereof projects laterally be tween and beyond the supporting posts 2. The member 6 is pivotally secured to the posts 2 as indicated at 10, such pivotal connection providing a fulcrum for the gate 5. The vertical members 8 are spaced from the posts 2 and 3 and with the gate in closed position, the outer ends 11 of the horizontal members 6 and '7 are disposed within the groove t of the guide post 3. The inner end 12 of the horizontal member 7 terminates adjacent the supporting posts 2, and the ends of the cross member 9 are substantially flush with the outer faces of the vertical members 8.
Embedded inthe roadway 1 and extending transversely thereof is a lever box 13 within which is pivoted one end of a lever 14. The free end of the lever 14 projects between and beyond the supporting posts 2 and is pivotally connected to the lower end of a link 15, the upper end of which is pivotally connected, as indicated at 16, to the projecting end portion of the horizontal member 6. The link 15 is of appropriate length to normally maintain the lever 14c at an incline and the pivot point 16 is spaced from the supporting posts 2 a slightly greater distance than the pivotal connection between the link 15 and lever 1 1 so that the link 15 is normally slightly inclined from top to bottom towards the 90 supporting posts 2.
Embedded in the roadway 1 and extending longitudinally thereof is a tread box 17 which is of less depth than the lever box 13 and within which is pivoted, as indicated at 18, 95 one end of a tread member 19, the free end of which extends over and. beyond the lever 1e. Upon the depression of the tread member 19, the lever 14 is forced downwardly to a horizontal position which exerts a downward pull on link 15. The downward pull on the link causes the horizontal member 6 to be pivoted about its pin 10, thereby swinging the outer end 11 in a vertical arc. Due to the loose pivotal connection between the horizontal members 6 and 7 and vertical members 8 and also between the cross member 9 and the vertical members 8, the members 8 retain their vertical position during the swinging movement of the horizontal member 6, where- I by the members 6, 7, 8 and 9 assume a folded position as indicated in Figure 3.
Upon the removal of the pressure upon the tread member 19, the weight of the gate 5 causes the same to fall by gravity to its normal closure position. A counterbalance is suspended by means of achain 21 from the horizontal member 6 adjacent the projecting end 22 of the latter, the purpose of which is to resist the latter portion of the closing movement of the gate 5. The chain 21 is of appropriate length to permit the counterbalance 20 to rest on the ground when the gate is in open position and the counterbalance 20 is of appropriate weight to permit the gate 5 to descend slowly to its closure position. The counterbalance 20 also assists in the first portion of the opening operation of the gate when a pressure is applied to the tread member 19.
The tread member 19 is adapted to be actuated by the passage of the wheel of a vehicle thereover, but the gate may be raised to open position by hand if desired. A hook 23 is secured to the upper end of one of the supporting posts 2 for engagement with an eye 24: formed on the horizontal member 6, by means of which the gate may be latched in open position if desired.
It is thought that the many advantages of an automatic gate in accordance with this invention will be readily apparent, and although the preferred embodiment of the invention is as illustrated and described, yet it is to be understood that various changes in the details of construction may be made which fall within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
hat I claim is In combination, an upwardly tiltable movable gate body including top and bottom members. the former being of greater length and projecting beyond the latter, a vertical support positioned adjacent one end of said bottom member, means for pivotally connecting said top member at a point between its vertical median and one end thereof within said support in proximity to the top of the latter, a weight, flexible means for suspending the weight, said means attached to said top member in proximity to the said end thereof, a vertical guide for receiving the other ends of said members, a normally inclined, horizontally disposed depressible lever extending through the lower portion of and projecting in opposite directions from said support, means for pivotally anchoring one of the ends of said lever in a roadbed, a link having one end pivotally connected to said top member between the pivot for the latter and the point of attachment of said flexible means and having its other end pivotally connected to the other end of said lever, and a depressing element for, directly engaging With and disposed transversely of said lever whereby on the depression of the latter by the said element the gate body will be tilted upwardly and automatically fold.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature hereto.
EDWARD WEIDLEIN.
