DOOR FASTENER.
Application filed February 9, 1925. Serial No. 7,770.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in door fasteners. While adapted for use on doors of various kinds, the invention is particularly adapted to be used on the doors of automobiles and other vehicles.
Objects of the invention are to provide a door catch oi: simple, durable construction, which is composed of few partsand which may be provided at a. low cost and which may be conveniently operated and will be very eiiicient in use.
A further object is to provide a door catch having a bolt and to provide new and improved mounting means therefor where by the same will be held in proper alinement and to provide new and improved means for regulating the length of the bolt whereby it may be adjusted. to sockets of different depths and may be adjusted to compensate for wear.
A further object is to provide a door catch having two bolts and to provide new and improved means whereby the same may be operated by a handle on either side of the door and to thereby provide acatch which will. be very eflicient in holding a door in alinement with the door iamb.

Proceeding new to adetailed description. of the invention with reference to the particular adai atation shown in the drawings,
the numeral ii is used generally to denote the catch casina. The casing is preferably rectangular in form and is provided with a 'torward wall 5, a rear wall 5, a bottom wall 5 and a top wall 5. The forward wall is provided with two spaced parallel bores G and 7. The walls oi. the plate 5 are thickened adjacent each or the bores 6 and 7 to provide the ll.1\ 'ardly projecting portions 8. The rear wall 5* is provided with a bore 9 which is preferably or the same sizi as the bore 6 and is termed in said rear Wall in axial alincrncnt therewith. The rear all is likewise provided with a similar bore which is :l orn'ied therein in axial alinen'ient with the bores 7. The numeral 10 denotes a cylindrical. bolt which is mounted in the bore 6 and. the numeral. ll denotes a like bolt which is mounted in the bore 'i'. Both the bolts 6 and. i are reduced in dian'ieter at the rear end thereof to provide a reduced portion 12. The reduced portion 12 is eylimlrical in term and is exterior-1y tin'eaded with the screw threads id.
The numeral 14; denotes an inl'eriorly threaded cylindrical cap which is operatively positioned on the reduced portion 12 The cap 14L is cylindrical in town and is preferably of the same diameter as the bolts 10 and ll. Each cap M is provided at the rear end thereof ,with the outwardly larder-ting circumterentially extending flange i5. The flange it") is preferably polygonal. or is otherwise termed to provide means where by the some may he engaged by wrench or other instrument tor operating it on the reduced portion The cap 14: is provided *all thcrco'l with a bore 16 in which is mounted. the screw 17 and each of the bolts 10 and 11 are provided with a lonigit-udinally directed threaded bore 18 which projects therein from the rear end thereof with the screw 17 being entered in said bore to lock each cap 14 on one of the bolts and 11.
The numeral 19 denotes a connecting memher which is provided adj ac'entthe upper end thereof with the bore 20 and is likewise provided adjacent the lower end thereof with the bore 21. The bores 20 and 21 are parallel and are adapted to receive the bolts 10 and 11, the bolt 10 being mounted in the bore 20 and the bolt 11 mounted in thebore 21. The member 19 is thickened adjacent each end thereof to provide the rearwardly projecting portions 22 and 23. The portions 22 and 23 form a relatively wide bearing surface for the bolts 10 and 11 whereby the said member will be held at a right angle with each of the said bolts. The member 19 is suitably secured to each bolt 10 and 11, preferably by means of a pin 24 which is entered in a suitableborc extendin through the member 19 and through said bolts.
' The numeral 25 denotes lugs which project inwardly from the rear wall 5 to provide a seat for a coil spring 26. One of the coil springs 26 is mounted on each bolt 10 and 11 and is arranged to be compressed between the rear wall 5 and the member 19. The thickened portions22 and 23 are each provided in the rear face thereof with n annular groove 27 which forms a seat for the forward end of the spring 26. 'The numeral 28 denotes a member which is rotatably mounted 'v in said casing so. as to turn on an axis extending at a right angle to the axis of the bolts 10 and 11. The member 28 is provided 32 wherebv the member 28 may be rotated and the bolts 10 and 11 operated as above described. Each of the bolts 10 and 11 terminate at the forward end thereof in a spherical surface.
The numeral 33 denotes a catch plate which isprovided with suitable sockets 34; and 85 for the reception of said bolts. The plate 33 is provided on the inner face thereof with inwardly projecting bosses 38 which are positioned thereon in axial alinement with the sockets 34 and 35, thus forming a wall for said sockets. The inner wall of each socket 34 and 35 is shaped to conform to the spherical end ofthe bolts 10 and 11. The catch plate is provided at one edge thereof with outwardly projecting strike portions 36 and 37 which are-turned to provide an inclined or curved surface adapted to engage the spherical surfaces of the bolts 10 and 11 and force the same inwardly in the bores 6 and 7 when the door is swung to a closed position.
It will be noted that the bolts 10 and 11 are held in an axial position by the relatively wide bearing members of the inwardly projecting portions 8 and the bores in the rear wall-also form a. bearing surface for the cap members 9 whereby the said bolts are positively held in their proper position. The catch is preferably designed with the bolts 10 and 11 equally spaced from the center of the casing, and equally spaced from each edge of the casing whereby the same may be invcrted and the catch used for doors swinging in either direction without changing any of theparts within the casing.
Having thus illustrated my invention and described the same in detail, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1s:
1. In a door catch, a casing, a pair of spaced parallel bores in the forward wall thereof, bolts slidably mounted in each of said bores, a member rigidly attached to each of said bolts and extending therebctween, bores in the rear wall of said casing, said bores being in axial aliuement with the first named bores, a cap threaded on the rear end of each of said bolts, each of said caps being mounted in one of the last named bores, a flange on each of said caps said flanges adapted to engage the rear wall of said casing to limit the forward movement of said bolts.
2. In a door catch, a casing, a pair of. spaced parallel bores in the forward wall thereof, bolts slidably mounted in each of said bores, a member rigidly attached to each of said bolts and extending therebetween, bores in the rear wall of said casing, said bores being in axial alinement with the first named bores, a flanged cap threaded on the rear end of each of said bolts, each of said caps being mounted in one of the last named bores with said flange engaging the rear wall of said casing, a member mounted in said casing at a point between said bolts for rotary movement on an axis extending at a right angle to said bolts, a cam on said member said cam adapted to engage said con necting member to more said bolts rearwardly in said casing.
3. In a door catch. in combination a suitable casing, a pair of spaced parallel bores in the forward wall thereof, a cylindrical bolt mounted in each of said bores, each bolt terminating at the forward end thereof in :1 spherical surface, a pair of like bores in the rear wall. of said casing. said bores being formed in axial alinement. with the first named bores, each of said bolts being provided adjacent the rear end thereof with an exteriorly threaded reduced portion, an interiorly threaded cylindrical cap mounted on each reduced portion, said cap provided with aflange adapted to engage the rear Wall of said casing to limit the forward movement of each bolt and a strike plate having sockets conforming in shape to the outwardly projeoting ends of said bolts whereby said caps may be operated to adjust said bolts in said sockets.
