Description
G. W. SKILBECK.
ADJUSTABLE KEEPER.
APPLICATION FILED DEC.26, 1919.
Patented Oct. 26-, 1920.
UNITED. STATES PATENT OFFICE. I
GERALD W. SKILIBECK, OF KENOSHA, WISCONSIN.
ADJUSTABLE KEEPER.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Oct. 26, 1920,
Application filed December 26, 1919. Serial No. 347,830.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GERALD W. SKILBEGK, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Kenosha, in the county of Kenosha and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Keepers, ofwhich the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanyin drawsand miles and-the keeper must then'b'e removed and a new one employed or else more metal must be added to the latch strike face thereof by welding or the like. If this is not done the doors rattle and cause considerable inconvenience to the operator and cocupants of the car.
With the above and other objections in mind my invention has for one of its objects to provide a iglloor latch keeper having an adjustable stri 'ng surface whereby 't e same may be readily adjusted to take up the wear withoutthe necessity of removing the keeper.
A further object of this invention is to provide a keeper of the class described which .will not detract from the general appearance of the car and which by reason of its simplicity of construction will be capable of com arativel cheap roduction.
struction, combination and arrangement of parts substantially as hereinafter described and more particularly defined by the appended claims, it being understood that such changes in? the precise embodiment of the herein, disclosed invention may be made as come within the scope of the claims.
In the accompanying drawing I have illustrated two complete examples of the physical embodiment of my invention constructed according. to the best modes I have so far devised for the practical a plication of the principles thereof, and in w 10h:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a vehicle bod and door illustrating my invention as app ied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of my im proved adjustable keeper; parts being .broken away and in section to more clearly illustrate the structural detailsthereof.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 of a slightly modified form of my invention.
ig. 4 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on the line 4:4=of Fig. 2, and
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on the line 55 of Fig. 3.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawing, 10 designates a body portion of a vehicle body having an openin thereinclosed by a door 11 having conceale therein a lock including an operating handle 12 and a latch member 13 adapted to engage a latch keeper or retaining member 14 secured to the vehicle body as depicted in he latch keeper comprises a securing plate 15 provided with securing screw receiving openings 16 and having a pair of complementary cam blocks or latch engaging segments 17 and 18 having the outer faces of their thick ends 19 providing a latch strike face behind which the latch 13 engages. The block 17 is a primarylock as in case the door 11 is not closed tight enough to engage the latch 13 behind the block 18 the same will engage behind the block 17 and thus prevent'the door from swinging open, and my invention has to do on lIy with the block 18 of the stop.
he end 19 of the block 18 wears down after the car has been used for several thousand miles and therefore permits the door this wear whi consists of threaded stud members 20 disposed within threaded apertures 21 within the block 18 and havin their outer ends 22 projected outwardly o the end 19 of said block.
In this arrangement the ends 22 of the studs 20 provide a latch striking surface and as the ends become worn the same may be readily adjusted by inserting a screw driver or other instrument into the rear of opento rattle and I rovide means for taking up ith the-a ove an other objects in view 7 5 which will appear as the-description pro-% ceeds my inventionresides in the-novel conings 21 to turn the studs to project their ends outwardly from the face 19.
In that form of my invention depicted in Figs. 3 and 5 the detachable block or plate -'23 is provided to take the place of the, end
19 of the block 18 depicted in Figs. 2 and 4 and this plate is secured to the block 18 by means of cap screws orthe like 24 havin their heads 25 recessed within counter-sun openings 26 within said plate and having their threaded ends engaged in threaded openingsQ'? within the block 18. on the outer face of the plate 23 is taken up by placing shims or washers 28 between the plate 23 and the outer face of the block 18. r 4
What I claim as my invention is:
l. A device of the class described c0mprising a keeper block having a striking face, and a strike member disposed Within said block and having a strike surface of less area than the striking face of the block, said member being movable into and out of the block to vary the relative positions of the striking face of the block and the strike surface of said member.
2. A device of the class described comprising a keeper block having striking face and provided with a longitudinally extending threaded bore communicating With the striking face, and a strike member having a threaded shank portion engaged in The wear said threaded bore and carrying a part having a strike surface, the threaded shank portion of said member being movable into and out of the threaded bore to vary the relative positions of the striking face and the strike surface.
3. A device of the class described comprising akeeper block having a striking face 30 and provided with two longitudinally extending parallel threaded bores communicating with the striking face, and two exteriorly threaded strike members engaged within the threaded bores and having their outer ends projected beyond the striking face of said block to provide a strike surface, said strike members, being movable into and out of said block to vary the relative positions of the striking face of the block and the strike surface formed by the outer ends of said strike members.
in testimony whereof I aflix my si aturea GER-ALD- W. SKILBECK.
