Description

A. BORN EXTRqS IONS PRES 5 Filed M8 10, 1927 Dec. 21, 1927. 1,654,109
Patented Dec. 27, 1927.
UNITED STATES PATENT, OFFICE.
ALFRED BORN, OF MAGDEBUBG, GERMANY, ASSIGNOR TO THE FIRM FRIED. KRUI P GBUSONWERK AKTIENGESELLSCHAFT,
0F MAGDEBURG-BUCKAU, GERMANY.
nxrnosrons rnnss.
Application filed May 10, 1927, Serial No. 190,363, and in Germany May 18, 1926.
My invention relates to plastic metal working presses known as extruding presses, in which the metal, preferably in a heated state, is forced through a die for producing .;olid or hollow articles as bars, tubes etc.
The invention relates to extruding presses of special type comprising a die, a stationary member for supporting the die, a movable container for receiving the metal ingot and a plunger for forcing the metal through the die.
Heretofore most presses of this type were designed iri'such wise as to perform so-callcd direct pressing operations, viz, forcing the F metal through the die by means of a Solid ram attached to the front of the plunger, said ram being pushed into the container while the latter was at rest, thus literally extruding the metal from the container.
As known to those familiar with the operation of metal presses of this kind, the extrusion of the metal ingot from the container metal is actually extruded through the die,
u offers considerable frictional resistance to the plunger and 1ts ram respectively in addi- T tion to the resistance offered by the die proper.
As a matter of fact the pressure exerted upon the metal ingot must first permeate its whole length which first causes a considerable compression of its molecules before the and thus consumes a relatively high proportion of power which is lost for the extruding action proper.
The object of my invention is to provide improved means for metal working presses of ,the direct pressing type set forth, by which the pressing process can be performedwhenever desired-also in the socalled indirect manner viz, pushing by means of the longer alone the metal ingot and the container in which it rests simultaneously ahead against and over the die respectively. In this case much less power is required for the pressing operation and another still ,more important advantage is achieved inasmuch as practically all the scale and other impurities formed at the surface of the ingot, will automatically be retained within the receiver "and will not contaminate the extruded metal.
Metal presses designed but for performin the indirect pressing process as outline above are already known in ractice and are structurally distinguished ,rom those for the direct pressing process therein that the the is carried on a die holder protruding from the frame of the press.
In other words the object of'my invention consists in providing improved means for presses of the types under consideration in such wise that one and the same ress can be conveniently adapted and use both for direct and indirect pressing operations, thereby extending considerably the field of its application in practice and entailing- Whenever used for indirect pressing-among other important advantages great economy in power consumption and producing goods of high quality.
Other objects of the invention will appear incidentally hereinafter.
The nature and scope of my'invention is briefly outlined in the appended claims and will bemore fully understood from the following specification taken together with the accompanying drawing.
Fig. 1. shows in longitudinal section an improved metal extruding press designed according to this invention and temporarily adapted for. performing so-called direct pressing operations; 7
Fig. 2 shows in longitudinal section the same improved press being temporarily adapted for performing indirect pressing operations as specified hereinbefore. I
In both figures 1 designates the stationary frame of the press at one side of which the:
According to this invention the ram 8 is .made hollow and is designed at its rear portion so as to be capable of being attached to the lunger 4 as well as to the hollow body 2 of the frame referably by one and the same fastening evice. In the embodiment of my invention shown by way of an exam le in the" drawin a clamping ring 9 isprovi ed' for securing t e hollow ram 8 to both members 4 and 2 of the press. As seen in Fig. 1 at theplunger 4 a recessand a. bearing plate 8 are provided for holding the ram 8. centrally in its proper place at the plunger 4. The head ortion of the ram 8 is designed so as to capable ofholdmg either a pressure plate 10, as shown in Fig. 1, serving as a lid to the hollow ram, or of holding I designed so that either the annular member 12 for fastening the die 11 or the clamping rin 9 forholdmg the hollow ram 8 can be easl y attached thereto, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2 respectively.
Wheneve the press is to be used for indi- :ect pressin goperations-as shown in Fig. 2a pressure plate 13 is to be inserted into the recess of the plunger 4 so as to replace the bearin plate 8 referred to above.
Various changes and modifications may be made in the design, assemblage, and cooperation of the principal component parts of plastic metal working presses of the type specified above, without substantially departing from the scope of the appended claims and deviating from the spirit of my invention.
It is obvious to those skilled in the art that metal presses showing the salient features of this invention may be provided with a mandrel for the production of hollow articles so container, a hollow ram, means for securing a said ram to said hollow frame body, means for securing said ram to said plunger, a die, means for securing said die to said ram, and means for securin said die to said hollow frame body, where y said press may be used for either direct or indirect pressing.
2. In a ress as set forth 1n claim 1, a detachable lid adapted to be applied to the head-portion of said hollow ram.
3. A press according to claim 1 in which said means for securing said ram to said hollow frame bod and to saidplunger comprises a detachab e clamping ring.
4. In a press as set forth in claim 1, a bearing plate and a pressure plate, said plunger having a recess adapted to receive said bearing plate or said pressure plate, said bearing plate being recessed to receive the base end of said ram.
The foregoing specification signed at Ber- 66 lin this 21st day of April, 1927.
