Description
Dec. 20, 192.7. 1,653,182
P. F. KING PLIER WRENCH I INVENTOR, ,Pera 0 22 I 1 127292 ATTORNEY Patented Dec. 20, 1927.
Pnncivai; FAULGNER KING, or MIAMI, FLOR-IDA.
1,653,182 P TENT-or Application filer! August 24, 1926., Serial No. 131,232.
Theinvention generally relates to'plier wrenches of the pivoted jawtype and primarilyhas for its object to provide a simple, inexpensive and compactly constructed plier wrench having exceptionally good gripping'qualities andthequa'lity of locl ing the jaws thereof clamped condition.
- lnits more detalled nature the invention I to H the gripping or comprises a lined body havin a lined jaw and handle, a second awinem er being pivoted to the body to cooperate with the first jaw and a second handlemember being pivoted to the body, said secondjaw member having jaw closing and locking and jaw opening cam faces, and said second handle member having projections for engaging the jaw closing and locking cam face when moved in one direction to close and lock the jaws to a clamped condition, and for engaging the jaw opening cam face when moved in the other direction to open said jaws. r v
The invention still further resides in the novel details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, all of which will be first fully described, then be particularly pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying draw-v ing, in which Fi ure 1 is a side elevation illustrating the plier wrench in the clamped condition.
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1,
the jaws being shown in the unlocked condition in full lines and. in the open position in dotted lines.
Figure 3 is a plan View of the plicr wrench shown in Figures 1 and Figures 4 and 5 are views similar to Figures l and 2 and illustratea nodiiied form of the invention.
In the drawingsl is the fixed body which has thefixed jaw 2 and handle 3 and to which the movable jaw 4 is pivoted at 5.
The movable jaw 4 has a closing and locking cam face Gand an opening cam face 7 the purpose for which will presently appear.
the closing and locking cam face .6 of the' movable aw 4, and with a lug 12, n ,co-
operative relation with theopening] cam face 7 of said aw. i
i EQ;
The cam face .7' of "the movable jaw 'ter minates with stop heel 13 for engaging the lug 12 to limit the openingof'the clamping aws. v 1 j f It "will be observed by refcrencc'to Fig ures land 2 of the drawing that by reason of the. correlative positions of the pivots 5 and 9, the cam faces (3 andT, the heel l011, and the lug 12, each time the handles are forced together the clamping jaws'2- and l are very forciblyvclamped together or upon a piece to be clamped, and automatically locked to such clamped condition against inadvertent retraction. \Vhen the handles areseparated the lock-clamp is broken and the jaws are forced apart.
In the form of the invention shown in Figures 4 and 5 the component parts of the wrench are the same in number and are equipped with similar camming surfaces and engaging portions in the ,form first described, the parts being slightly rearranged whereby to provide for an increased leverage in the clamping and locking action of those parts having like purpose and function to corresponding parts in the first embodiment bear the same reference numerals with the index letter and therefore further detailed description of the second embodinient of the invention is thought to be un necessary. 7
From the foregoing description taken in connection with'the accompanying drawing, it s thought that the novel details of conapparent to those skilled which it relates. i
What I claim is:
1. In plier wrenches, a body having a fixed jaw and handle, a movable jaw .pivoted to the body, a movable handle pivoted to said body, said movable jaw and said movable handle having cooperating portions located above and other cooperating portionslocated below a line passed through said movable jaw and movable handle pivots in the art to and adaptedto coengage to effect a clamping and locking of the aws when the hanstruction, the mannerof use and the advantages of the invention Wlll be readily dles are moved in one direction and to effect a release of the locking condition and an opening of the jaws when the handles are moved in the opposite direction.
2. In plier wrenches, a body having a fixed aw and handle, a movable aw pivoted to the body, a movable handle pivoted to the body, said movable jaw having a cam face bearing acute angular relation to the plane on which the movable jaw and handle pivots are located, and said movable handle havingan extension for engaging said cam face when the handles are pressed toward each other to effect a clamping of the jaws whereby tendency to separate the aws when clamped will cause said cam face to act on said extension in a manner tending to draw the handles toward each other.
3. In plier wrenches, a bodyhaving a fixed jaw and handle, a movable jaw pivoted to the body, a movable handle pivoted to the body, said movable jaw having a cam face positioned on a plane bearing acute angular relation to the plane on which the axes of the movable jaw and handle pivots are located, and said movable handle having an extension for engaging said cam face when the handles are pressed toward each other to efiect a clamping of the jaws, said cam face being spaced a lesser distance from the pivot of the movable jaw than the engaging end of the extension is spaced from the pivot of the movable handle.
4:. In plier wrenches, a body having a fixed aw and handle, a movable aw pivoted to the body, a movable handle pivoted to the body, said movable jaw having a cam face bearing acute angular relation to the plane on which the movable jaw and handle pivots are located, and said movable handle having an extension for engaging said cam faceiwhen the handles are pressed to ward each other toefl'ect a clamping of the jaws, whereby tendency to separate the jaws when clamped will cause said cam face to act on said extension in a manner tending to draw the handles toward each other, said cam face and extension engaging portions being positioned to one side of and in ad vance of the pivots and said movable jaw and said movable handle having other portions located attlie other side of and between the pivots and adapted to coengage when. the handles areseparated to release the clamped condition and effect a separation of the aws.
