This invention relates to vises of the type in. which the operating screw engages a detachable nut carried on a slide mounted in guides in the fixed jaw, its object being to provide improvements in the construction, particularly in the form of the nut and in the means for supporting and detachably fitting it.
In vises of this type an abutment has been provided on the fixed jaw to engage the slide portion of the nut, but according to the present invention the parts are shaped and arranged so that the abutment engages the nut adjacent to its tapped portion and between that portion and its slide. By thus removing the abutment from proximity to the guides the stress on the latter when the vise is tightened is considerably reduced. The abutment may be, and preferably is, still further removed fromthe guides by being spaced apart therefrom between them and the screw connection with the movable jaw, the nut being extended forward of its slide to engage the abutment. The nut preferably comprises a slide with bevelled edges and a central web carrying the tapped portion, this being a known form but the central web extends forward of the slide, which engages undercut guides in the fixed jaw, and the abutment engages the extended part of the web. Suitable means such as a pin passing through the base plate of the vise, are provided for retaining the nut in engagement with the guides and abutment.

The fixed jaw 1 of the vise is adapted to be secured to the bench by any suitable means and is provided with the usual aperture for the reception of the movable jaw 2 which is caused to slide therein on suitable bearing surfaces or main guides 2:L by means of the operating screw 3 rotatably fitted to the movable jaw 2 and engaging the tapped portion l of a detachablenut fitted to the fixed jaw l. As shown in Figures 3 and 4 the detachable nut comprises a slide 5 having bevelled edges and a central web 6 car-y ries the tapped portion 4. The fixed jaw l` is provided with undercut guides 7, hereinafter termed secondary undercut guides7 the slide 5 being formed to fit these guides. An abutment 8 is also formed inside the fixed jaw l adapted to engage the detachable nut between its slide 5 and its tapped portionI .4. Preferably, as shown in the drawings,
the abutment 8 is spaced apart from the guides 7 and is situated between the secondary guides and thepoint'at which the screw y3 is rotatably connected to the movable jaw 2, the web 6 of the detachable nut being extended forward of its slide 5 as .shown at 9 and being formed with a bearing surface lO'to fit against the abutment 8.
The rear end of the movable jaw 2 may be closed as shown at 11 (Figure 1) a suffi ing through the base plate ofthe fixed jaw. r
Finally the operating screw 3 may be passed through the front of the movable j aw 2,
caused to enter the tapped portion 4 of the detachable nut and be engaged with the movable jaw 2 by the insertion of a pin 13 or the fixing of a collar placed thereon before engagement with the nut.
As the vise is tightened the abutmentk 8 will take the pressure, and its situation, removed from proximity to the secondary guides 7 and as near to the screw as practical will relieve these guides from the stress which would otherwise be placed on them due to the tendency of the rear' part of the slide 5 to be lifted if, for example, the abutment 8 engaged the forward end of the slide.
In a vise comprising a fixed jawA and a jaw movable in guides thereon the combination of a screw rotatably connected to the movable jaw, secondary undercut guides on the fixed jaw, n slide detaohably fitted n the secondary guides, a nut carried on the slide cooperating with the screw and eX- tended forward of the slide towards the movable jew and an abutment on the fixed jaw spaced apart from the secondary guides between them and the screw connection With the movable jew and engaging and supporting the front ond of the extended portion of the nut.
