Description
W. WEST.
Bedstea'd.
N.PETERS. FHDTD-LITHOGRAPHEH, WASHINGTON, D C4 UNITED STATEs PATENT OEEI WILLIAM WEST, OF TORONTO, CANADA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT 'TO GEORGE WEST, OF SAME PLACE.
|MPRovMi-:NT IN BDsTEADs.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 165,251, dated July 6, 1875; application led February 3, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM WEST, of the city of Toronto, in the county of York, in the Province ot' Ontario, Canada, silver-plater, have invented certain new and useful im provements in Bedsteads and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, whereby others skilled in the art could make and use the same, reference being had to the drawings accompanying this specication.
My invention relates to bedsteads which are used in other rooms or apartments beside sleeping apartments, and is suitable for boarding-houses, offices, or stores-in boardinghouses, inasmuch as each boarder can more easily have an opportunity for reading and study than when necessitated to sit inthe public room. My be'dstead is constructed so that the front portion of the case in which it is placed is fitted up as a book-case and wardrobe. In offices it may be fitted up entirely as a book-case, and in stores as a show-case.4
My invention consists in constructing the main case (which contains the bed) so that a sliding frame, in which is a drawer and to which the bed is hinged, is drawn out from one of its sides, and 4will generally run along the wall of the room, office, or store in which it may be placed. The feet are hinged to the bed, and when being folded down theytake a perpendicular position from their'own gravity. There is also a drawer, to which the bed is hinged, and is used for stowing thecushion when the hed is folded up and in its position in the case.
In theaccompanying drawings the same letters of reference indicate the same parts in all the views and in this specitication.
Fig. 1 is a front view of my device, and is here shown asa book-case and wardrobe. AA, the doors, which are open far enough'to show the book-shelves B B, &c., on one side and.
Ybed D fully out of the main case and folded down; showing also feet E, doors A A, and sliding inner case F, into which the bed is folded up when it is run into the main case. Fig. 4 is a side view, with a portion of the sliding inner case F removed, to show the recess G in ina-in case, into which the bed D is run to remain during the day; showing also the position of bed D when prepared for occupation, the feet E, cushion H, and drawer K. Fig. 5 is a plan showing the bed D drawn ont and folded down, and drawer K.
Having described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The main case, having the front portion thereof constructed and arranged as described,
vand having the recess G in its rear portion, in
combination with the sliding frame F, drawer K, and folding bed D, substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
WILLIAM WEST. Witnesses:
