UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IBAJ OWEN, 0F GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN, ASS IGNO B T0 IBISSELL CARPET SWEEPER COMPANY, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN.
ADJUSTABLE-HANDLE STRUCTURE FOR VACUUM CLEANERS.
. Application filed September 13, 1924. Serial-No. 737,620.
This invention relates to adjustable handle structures for suction cleaners.
The object of the invention is to provide an adjustable handle for purposes of manipulation and also for convenience in storing the vacuum cleaner.
Ob'ects pertaining to details and economies of construction and operation will definitely appear from the detailed description to fol- I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claim,
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this application, in which:
Fig. I is a general side elevation view of a structure embodying the features of my invention with the handle to position for storage or general cleaner use.
Fig. II is an enlarged detail view of the upper portion of the case and the bifurcated connection of the handle with my improvement in place, the release position of the adjusting bolt being indicated by dotted lines.
- arrows at the ends of the section lines.
Fig. III is a similar enlarged detail view" of the adjuster means in exploded relation.
Fig. IV is a similar enlarged detail transverse sectional view taken on line 44: of Figs. I and II, showing details of the retainer spring arrangement.
Fig. V is a detail longitudinal sectional view through the sockets of the handle and the retainer means, taken on a line corresponding to line 55 of Fig. IV.
In the drawing similar reference characters refer to;similar parts throughout theseveral views, and the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little The parts of'the drawing will be referredto by their numbers. 1 is a vacuum cleaner body and its assoc1- ated nozzles and parts. 2 is the handle of tubular form afiording a conduit preferably for the electric connections. 3 is a fork for connecting the handle socket to .the case, the same being pivoted at 4. The socket 5 is extended into a lateral support for the bolt 6. The bolt 6 is enclosed in a suitable bore. 51 disposed parallel tothe axis ofthe handle reception of the retaining spring 7. I 5
' The handle fork 3 is provided with a stop 31 for co-operation with a stop 11 on the case to support the handle in vertical position.
The bolt 6 provided in the bore 51 has a rounded engaging end 61 for engaging adjusting holes or notches 12 and 13 in the upper side of the case. When the bolt engages at 12 the-.handl'e is inclined at the usual working postion, and the machine may be operated when these engage, or the handle may be swung to the horizontal position and the bolt engage the socket 13 when the entire suction cleaner can be made use of after the same manner that the usual'suction tool is handled. Also, in this position the structure is in very compact flat form for storage and can be hung up on a closet hook.
The bolt 6 is provided with a reduced shank portion 63 which is engaged by the spring 7 which is disposed transversely in as stated. The opposite ends 71 of the spring 7 are. bent and contact with the socket 5 at eachside of the bolt, and a depressed portion 72 conforms to the side of the bolt and engages yieldingly in the reduced shank portion 63. 4
The bolt is provided with a top piece 62 which is conformed to and The spring and shoulders cooperate to limit" the sliding movement to the locked and unlocked positions of the bolt.
uided by the. handle 2 of the cleaner end an projects out- Having thus described my invention, what A I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination. with the case of a suction cleaner, of a handle receiving socket 75 the slot 52' in position to engage the same,
pivotally mounted upon said case, a slidable locking bolt carried by the handle socket and adapted to engage holes in said case for diflerent angular adjustments of the handle 5 for various uses, said bolt having a reduced neck forming two stop shoulders and a leaf spring supported by the socket transversely of the bolt to frictionallyand yieldingly engage the reduced neck, the said sfin'irg and shoulders cooperating to limit t e 1 of the bolt in its movement to locked or unlocked positions.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
IRA J. OWEN.
