Application filed April 4,
vention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig.1 1s a sectional v ew taken on line 1-1of Figs. 3 and 4:, showing one of my impro'ved point protectors in place on a bit.
Fig. 2 is a detail view of the same in process or application to the bit point.
Fig. 8 is a detail view of the bit point protector removed from the bit.
Fig. 4; is ELbOttOHl view of the same.
Referring to the drawing, 1 is a bit of 2 is my improved bit point protector point. r
heavy body portion and a tubular having a wall 3 forming a socket & which receivesthe end of the bit. There is an upwardly projecting boss 5 at the center which contains a tapered screw-threaded'hole 6 entirely therethrough to receive the screw point of the bit. An aperture 7 extending from the bottom' of the screw-threaded part to the outside facilitates manufacture and afiords means for readilycleaning the same. The outside or my bit point protector is preferably knurled.
In use it will be noted that the cutters of the bit are introduced into a close fitting cylindrical socket and are thereby protected, and as the screw point of the bit screws into the hole it affords a strong support for the center part of the bit, thus supporting the cutat the 1927. A bit point protector comprising a shell with heavy body and cylindrical side walls forming a socket for the end of the bit, and as a boss at the center of the socket containing a tapered threaded hole to receive the screw pointed tip of the bit and encase the cutters at the sides in spaced relation from the bottom of the socket, as specified.
3. A bit point protector comprising a shell with a head body and cylindrical side walls forming a socket for the end of the bit, having a tapered threaded hole to receive the screw pointed tip of the bit and encase the cutters at the sides, as specified.
