IMPROVEMENT IN SKATES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 165,2 I 6, dated July 6, 1875; application filed May 31, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, JOHN C. DEXTER and EDGAR V. TANNER, of Florence, in the county of Hampshire and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Skates; and We do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.

Our invention relates to an improvement in skates; and it consists in an arrangement of parts by which a skate may be firmly attached to the foot by means of clampingdevices for both the heel and the sole, as will be more fully described hereafter.

The accompanying drawings represent my invention.

A represents the runner of a skate, and B the standards upon which the foot rests. The plate 0 for the ball of the foot is rigidly attached to the two foremost standards, and has two longitudinal slots, at, near its outer edges, through which pass the screw-bolts b, which, after'passing through the plate (J, continue downward through holes in the carrier 0, and through slots d in the sole-clamps D, under which they are confined by nuts. The clamps D, turning upward from 'under the sides of the plate 0, are just in front of the widest part of the sole of the boot or shoe, and are laterally adjustable, so that when properly set and then drawn back they will clamp the sole firmly to the front part of the skate. I The carrier cis attached to the arms of a connecting-rod, f, which rod, passing backward, is secured to a slotted plate, 9, the said plate having a pin, 1), projecting from its under side, that enters a curved slot, r, in the cam h, which cam turns upon a pivot in the center of the heel -piece '0 Under the cam are two flanges, 1, between which a key is to be inserted. Upon the plate 9 is secured the adjustable clamp E. by means of a screw-bolt, which passes through the slot m, which clamp is intended, in connection with the clamps F at the rear edge of the heel-plate, to fasten in the heel. If the cam his turned the pin 1), following the movement of the cam, draws or pushes the connecting-rodf, so as to operate the clamps D and E. Hence, if the rod be drawn backward, the clamps D seize the sole of the boot, and the clamp E is forced into the front part of the heel, while the clamps F enter the heel from behind, thus securing the skate to the boot.

Having thus described our invention, we claim- The combination of the footplate 0, having the slots a, clamps D, carrier-plate 0, connecting-rod f, slotted plate g, adjustable slamp E, pin 19, and plate h, having the circular slot 1', substantially as shown and described.
