M. E. KENNEY CONDENSED MILK CAN PERFORATOR Filed March 17, 1926 v INVENTOR Ny/m/v If. fz/wv v ATTORNEY Patented Dec. 6, 1927.
UNITED STATES JET-RON E. KENNEY, OF EVERETT, WASHINGTON.
OONDENSED-MILK-CAN PERFOR ATOR.
Application flied March 17, 1826. Serial No. 95,328. i
, that can'be formed completely out of one sheet of metal by a single punching operation. 1
With the foregoing objects in view, my invention resides in the novel manner of forming the device and in the shaping of parts thereof so that they will serve as a support for the can to be perforated and as a guard for sustaining the can in position when the punch pierces the hole in the upper end thereof.
In accomplishing these and other objects of the invention, I have rovided the improved details of construction, the preferred. forms of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein Figure 1 is a planview of the punched out blank from which the device is formed.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the device in operative position.
. Referring more in detail to the draw- 1n si designates the flat blank of sheet metal from which the device, as shown in Figure 2, except the punch lever, is formed, the blank being formed as shown by a single punching operation. The blank comprises a flat endportion 2, adapted to serve as the mounting base for the perforating device and which is almost separated from the other end portion 3 of the blank by slots 4- 1 which lead into the blank from opposite side edges leaving only a narrow central neck portion 5 whereby the parts 2 and 3 are joined. The part 3 is adapted to serve as a positioning su port or guard for the can being perforate and also as a mounting for the punch or perforating lever 6 pres e'ntly described.
Extending centrally from the upper end of the portion 3 of the blank are standards, or extensions, 7-7, provided at. their ends with aligned apertures 8 for receiving a screw, or bolt, 9 whereby the punch lever 6, as shown in Figure 2, is pivotally mounted.
The punch lever is formed from a single piece of metal that may be stamped out of the metal sheet atthe same operation when blank 1 is punched, and it comprises an outer end portion 10, and, on its under edge, has two downwardly projecting piercing oints 11-11, adapted for piercing the en Wall of a can adjacent its opposite edges.
A hole, 12, is provided centrally in the base 2 for receiving a screw, or other means for securing the device in place-upon a table or other form of support. c
When-the metal blank has been formed in themanner described, the upper portion 3 is bent at the neck portion 5 at a right angle to the base portion 2, as is illustrated in Figure 2, and the opposite side portions of the part 3 are curved radially inwardly to form wing uards that receive the can therein; the radial curvature of the wings to be sli htly greater than that of a condensed mi k can for whichthe device is intended. The extensions 7,7 that form the support 3 for the punch lever are bent inwardly in s aced-apartrelation to receive one end of t e'lever 6 which is pivotally attached thereto by the bolt 9, as above described.
In use, the can, as indicated at 15 in dotted lines in Figure 2, is placed upon the base 2 within the wing guards of the upright-portion 3 which serves to retain the can properly in osition. The punch lever is thengpressed own by the handle 10 and the oints 11 caused to pierce-the upper end of t e can.
' Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
A device of the class described comprising a single metal piece that is bent at right angles forming a base and an upstanding portion and having the side edges of the upstanding 1 portion severed from the base and curved inwardly to partially encompass a can placed in the base. extensions formed on the 11' per end of said upstanding por- (ill tion and entin spaced apart, parallel relation, and a punch lever pivotally attached at one end between said anges and providcd with piercing-points on its under edge adapted to pierce holes in the top of the can whenpositioned u on said base.
Signed at 'Seatt e,- King County, Washington, this 14th day of January, 1926.
