norman runNAcE.
Application led December 14, 1920, Serial No. 430,655, and in Belgium August 10, 1920.
The subjectmatter of the present invention is a water-tube boiler heated by a furnace using pulverized or non-pulverized coal, and designed with a view to lensuring 'a complete combustion of this fuel. For this purpose, the boiler is divided, in so far as the course followed bythe gases is con'- cerned, into two communicating compartments, in the first of which the coal is burnt by means .of hot air and transformed into CO, which is burnt into CO.. in the second compartment by `hot air. This hot air is supplied by a heater.
The accompanying drawing shows a boiler according to the present invention.
v Figure 1 is a section taken substantially on the line .-17-1 Aof Fig. 2 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Fig.' 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of 2 Fig. 1.
'Figure 3 isfa section on the line 3--3 of The boiler shown consists of two drums 1 and 2, connected with each other by means of vertical tubes 3 and 4, divided into two separate sets by thefvertical partition 5, which forms -two compartments 7 and 8, which are in communication with eachother only from below.v
The furnace includes burners 6 and 6' which are fitted at the top part of each of 'the compartments 7 and 8. the walls of which are fitted internally with baies 9 de, signed to compel the gases and the'air to circulate between the tubes 3 and 4.
The feeding of the boiler with water is @effected by means of a pipe 10 leading to the bottom drum 2. It is advantageous to subject this water to preliminary heating, by
means of a- {iue gas economizer or similar. apparatus 12, utilizing the hot gases issuing from the flue 14, previous to their escape through the chimney 13. -The pipe 10 is placed in communication with the drum 1 by a pipe 15 controlled by a valve 11. i The level of the water in the top drum 1` is therefore regulated by the level in the heater 12, in such a wayvthat an intense vaporization and circulation, as well as a continuous feeding with water. can be obtained. The pulverized coal is injected into the irst compartment 7 through -the burners 6, and transformed by combustion into CO by means of hot. yair supplied in an insufficient Aquantity to burn the fuel completely. The
away from the bottom of said second'comgases descend in compartment 7, in a direction opposite to that of the circulation of water in the tubes 3, following the course formed by the baiies'9, and are delivered thru the conduit 20 to the burners 6 in the top of the chamber 8 where they are completely burned into (10,. air being suitably supplied to the burners through pipes 6a for this purpose. The products of this combustion pass downwardly thru chamber 8, thence out at the bottom and eventually into the chimney 13, v
Having fully described my invention, what I desire to .claim and secure by Letters Patent is v1. In a boiler furnace, in combination, a furnace housing, al partition dividing said furnace housing into two compartments, water tubes arranged in each compartment, a. burner disposed at the top of the {irst compartment for burning fuel with a. liniited quantity of air therein, a flue for conducting the gases from the bottom of the first com,- partment to the top of the second compartment, a burner disposed at the top of said second compartment forburning the gases with an additional supply of air, and a flue for conducting the products of combustion partment.
2. In -a boiler furnace. in' combination, a furnace housing, a partition dividing said furnace housing into two' compartments, vertical water tubesarranged in each compartf' ment, baflies in said compartments for causing burning gases to travel from side to side across said tubes in passing through said compartments, a burner disposed at the topv of the first compartment for burning fuel` with a limited quantity of air therein. a Hue for conducting the gasesfrom the bottom of thefirst compartment to the top of the second compartment. a burner disposed at the top of said second compartment for burning the gases with an additional supplyof air` and a flue for conducting the products of combustion away from the bottom` of said second compartment. y
l3. Ina boiler furnace. in combination, a furnace housing. a partition dividing said furnace housing into two compartments, vertical water tubes arranged in each compartment, a burner disposed in one end of thc First compartment for burning fuel with a conducting the gases from the end of the tical tubes being in an opposite direction in rs't compartment opposite ythe burner to one eachv compartment to the ow of burning end` of the second compartment, a burner gases, and aue for conductingthe products 10 disposed atthe same end of the second comof combustion away from the end of said I partment as that to which the Hue leads for second compartment o posite the burner.
