A. EGGERTH l LEGGING' Filed Feb.2'7. 1926 I Patented Dec. 6, 1927.
UNITED Sra'fissiv PATENT l IoFaIfi VALFRED EGGERTH', OF MGCAMMON, IDAHO.
Application filed February 27, 1326. `Serial No., 91,054..
This invention relates to leggingsl and par-l ticularly lto leggi-nge capable oi? iitting legsv of various sizes. Y
It is the main object of the invention to provide a simple but highly el'icient legging having` an extremely wide range ol' adinet ability both as to circumference. oitl the leg on which worn and as to the contour thereojt.
It is a further object to provide 4a device ot this; nature which will be substantially water proof, which is capable of being lllllutactured very cheaply and which may be wrapped about the leg and secured quickly.
A further object ot the invention isg'to provide. a legging which is wrapped or wound about the leg in' overlapped position so. constructed that the body thereo may7 be expanded to conform with the particular contour of the leg on which. worn and which will when detached retain' its conformed shape.
It is a more specific object ot' the invention to provide such a device having a plurality ot spaced aligned sets otk fastening means adjacent its overlapped and overlap ping edges one set ot' which fastening means is carried by means of severable tabs whereby a great variety of adjustments may bc made to secure the legging about legs. of dilierent circumferences.
These and other objects ot the invention will be apparent from the following description made in accordance with Vthe accompanying drawings wherein like characters relier to similar parts throughout the several views, and in which Fig` l isV a side elevation ot the prelterred ilorm oit the invention secured in one of its overlapped positions.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the legging opened and detached from the leg.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view showing the construction of the body ot the legging, the dotted lines indicating the expansibility therein, and
Fig. 4 is a cross section taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3.
ln the drawings the body of the legging is shown as constructed of three parts, 5, 6 and 7 respectively, cut outl in blanks and stitched together. Portion 5 will be referred to as the overlapped portion, portion G as the central portion and portion 7 as the overlapping portion. Each of portions 5, 6 and 7 are cut out from a sheet such as illustrated in Figs. 8 and 4. This sheet comprises outer and inner layers c and b. et .tbrous material: Such, as Strona paper between which a Sizing of substantially water proof material; c sucii as asphalt or rubberized cloth is interposed. The sheet, it will be noticed, is crimped, the several layers being uniformly treated whereby the sheet may be expanded and will retain its expanded shape after being released.
A toot strap cured at one end to theljower edge of the central portion 6, having its other end passed through a slot or eyel 7a, adjacent the lower edge ot" overlapping portion-7.V `The L'projected end of strap 8 may be knotted desired to vary the length thereof,4 as shown in Fig.
On the overlapped portion 5,` l provide several sets or series (herein showii 21s two sets) of aligned snap studs or other faste-n ing members. The outer-.set of said studs, indicated by the numeral 9, are spaced some distance from the inner set l0 and aligned therewith onV the outery side of portion 5; Overlapping member 7 carries on its inner side two or more ysets kol"V complementary las# tening members; (shown as snap buttons), one'set oi' which, ll, is fastened through they edge oity member 7, also securing thereto a plurality of relatively small tabs l2.,` vTabs l2 may be formed of fabric or` other material which may vbe cut.4 Preferably l jorm the tabs of elastic materia/l.` The secondv set o snap buttons or fastening devices 13 are cured to the tree ends tabs; 1.2. It will be noticed that the distance betweenthe snap 8 ot elastic material is se- Sil buttons ll andthesnap.buttons 41.2 is greater than the distance between snap studs 9 and l0, whereby a greater range ot adjustability may be secured in fastening the leggingabout the leg.
In attaching the legging the strap 8 is first disposed below the instep of the shoe and the overlapping portion 7 is then wound snugly about the overlapped portieri 5. The two sets ot' cooperating fastening members which are closest together are then united to efficiently secure the device to the leg. Because of the construction of the sheet from which the body is formed the members 5, 6 and 7 may be readily expanded or stretchedv to neatly lit the contour of the cali:l of the leg on which applied. Since the multi-layer sheet is crimped the legging will retain its conformed shape when detached and atteionce being tightly fitted to the leg, may
thereafter be quickly applied. If it is not necessary to employ the set of fastening devices 13, the tabs 12 may be severed ani dispensed with.
Four different adjustments are possible in' the legging illustrated in the drawings.y
The snap buttons 13 may be secured to snap either towards 9 or 107 or snap buttons 11 may be secured to either of the two sets of snap st-uds carried by overlapped portion 5. The adjustable fastening means coupled With the construction of the legging make it possible for a single legging to fit practically all sizes and shapes of legs. i
The material from which the legging is made may be manufactured cheaply and the water proof sizing Will protect the wearer from the inclemency of the Weather aswell as considerably increase the ruggedness and strength of the device. n i
The legging is especially adapted for tourists or campers and is of high utility to protect the Wearers limbs from mosquitos or iiies as Well as from moisture or brush. A
It will of course be understood that various changes may be made in the form, details, proportions and arrangement of parts Without departing from the scope of the invention.
l/Vhat is claimed is:
1. A garment for the limbs comprisinga strip of material adapted to be wrapped and overlapped about the limb to be covered, means for securing the overlapping edge of said strip to the overlapped edge thereof.' said strip being made of eXtensible but nonelastic material adapted to conform to the shape of the limb and to retain its conformed shape after removal fromvthe limb.
2. The structure set forth in claim 1, means adjacent the overlapping edge of said strip and means adjacent kthe overlapped edgeadapted to cooperate to adjustably secure said parts together.
3. A legging or analogous garment comprising a strip of material adapted to be Wrapped and overlapped about the limb to be covered, means for securing the overlapping edge of said strip tothe body portion thereof, said strip being made of crimped material adapted to conform to the shape of the limb and to retain its conformed shape after removal from the limb.
1. A legging or analogous garment having in combination a strip body portion adapted to be Wrapped and overlapped about a limb and comprising an outer layer of crimped fibrous material and an inner layer of substantially Water proof material crimped with said outer layer, and means for securing the overlapping edge of said strip to they body thereof whereby said strip will ronform to the shape of the limb and retain its conformed shape after removal therefrom.
5. A garment for the limbs comprising a strip adapted to be Wrapped and overlapped about a limb, a fastening device on said overlapped portion of said strip, a corresponding and co-operating fastening `device adjacent the overlapping edge of said strip and a severable tab secured to the overlapping edge of said strip and carrying a fastening member adapted to cooperate with said first mentioned `fastening member if so desired.
6. A garment for the limbs, comprising a strip adapted to be Wrapped about a limb With its ends overlapped, a plurality of circumferentially spaced fastening means on the overlapped end of said strip and a plurality of circumferentially spaced co-operating fastening means on the overlapping` end of said strip, said second mentioned fastening means being spaced a different dis? tance apart than saidfirst mentioned fastening means, whereby a plurality of adjustments may be made in securing the ends of said strip together.
In testimony whereof he 'does affix his signature.
.ALFRED EGGERTH.
