My invention relates to improvements in shades and particularly to lamp shades. Theinvention has amongy its other objects the production of a device of the vkind described, which is extremely yneat and att-ractive in appearance, simple, convenient and satisfactory for use wherever found applicable. Many other Vobjects and advantages of the constructionherein shown and described will be obvious to those skilled in the art from the disclosure herein given.

To this end my inventionk consists in thev novel construction., arrangement and combi# nation of parts herein-shown and described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.

is the body portion of a lamp shade embody-k ing the invention, the lamp shade being shown in an intermediate stage of manufacture in this figure. Thebody portion 10 may be of any desired size and shape and may be made of any suitablematerial, but in this instance is shown as a frustro-conical article formed of parchmentized material which is relatively pliable. As shown in Figure 4,*the completed lamp shade comprises an annulus or collar 12, which is preferably formed from metal and is provided with an inwardly opening annular groove 13 adapted to accommodate an annular Iiange 14 struck up from thebody portion 10. 'Ihe annular flange 14 is secured in the groove 13 by a ring 15, which is preferably formed from some fibrous material, such as paper, cardboard or the like. The collar 12 may be provided with screwthreads 17 or the vequivalent whereby the v peripheryV of the collar (Figure 2).

rlamp shade may` be supported byy or suspended from any suitable device (not shown) In Figures 1, 2 and 3, I have illustrated various steps in the manufacture of my improved lamp shade. rlo assemble the lamp shade, the'collar 12 is first placed upon any suitable support, such as, for instance, a plate 19, the plate 19 being provided with av recess 19a adapted to receive the collar and aplug 2O adapted to center the collar with respect to a plurality of posts 21 projecting upwardly from the plate 19. rEhe posts 21 are adapted to center theibody portion 10 with respect to the collar 12 when the body portion is placed upon the collar in the manner illustrated in Figure 1. After the body port-ion 10 has been properly positioned upon the collar 12 the annular flange 14 is formed by pressing downwardly upon that part of the body portion disposed within the ring 15 is then positioned upon a tool 23 in the manner illustrated in Figure 5, the tool 23 being provided with a cylindrical portion 24 upon which the ring 15 loosely seats. One edge of the ring 15 is then forced kagainst a frustro-conical surface 25 formed in a block 26 to turn' this inwardly in the manner illustrated in Figure 5. rIhe tool 23 is employed to force `the ring 15 into the collar 12 to secure the annular flange 14 in the groove 13. This expands the collar 12. IVhen the tool is'removed the ring 15 is slightly deformed or compressed to hold the flange 14 securely in the collar 12.

Having thus described my invention, it is obvious that various immaterial modifications maybe made in the same without departing from the spirit of my invention; hence I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact form, construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described or uses mentioned.

What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. The combination with alamp shade, of a metallic annulus having an annular groove formed in its inner surface, said shade projecting into said groove, and a second annulus expanded under pressure in said shade and engaging Vthe groove and shade to secure it in said groove.

2. In a device of the character described. a collar having an inwardly opening annu;
